Freelancer.exe thread hangs on Exit

I was having a rather severe problem, where nearly EVERY time I went to the Internet multiplayer window, my system would completely reboot just when it seemed the serverlist update was complete. Sometimes it would happen sooner, sometimes not at all.

Well, I only wanted to play one server, so I dug out the manual-add command line option, and have used that ever since.

The new problem is, when I leave the server after connecting, the game locks. trying ANY method to quit the game or leave the server, freelancer locks. I get to the desktop, end task, it ends, but the thread remains in processes. Can't kill the process at ANY point, up to and including alt-tabbing (which works fine in/out) and trying to end task or end process when the game isn't locked.. no dice.

The only way to get rid of the freelancer.exe process is to reboot.. not via shut-down (though I think that worked a couple times), but by an actual reset, as the system simply won't reboot when told with that hung process.. Though, if I do nothing about it, it tends to hard-boot on its own as it did when going into multi-internet. And I can't restart freelancer until the process has been eliminated.

This is truely annoying, and as of yesterday I started going to the character select screen, alt-tabbing out, and leaving it where it is till I'm ready to go back (running in the background).

Anyone else have similar problems? or, more importantly, solutions?

And oh-goody, I have all the 'suspect hardware'.. cept the AMD cpu's

How large have you set you page file to?

Post Mon Mar 10, 2003 5:23 pm

My pagefile has a max. of 1600Mb, that should be enough... with also almost 400Mb RAM

I had the problem too. Its Zonealarm. Just disable it.

well I'll be a son of a monkey's mother...

that did it.. killing ZoneAlarm prior to starting the game seemed to eliminate the hang!

I updated my sound card drivers (sb.com released a new pack on 2-28), rebooted, killed ZA, fired up the game, joined a server, disconencted, quit... no problem whatsoever! The menu's even seemed a little snappier..

Re-enabled ZoneAlarm, and boom, locked up trying to exit server..

*sigh*.. time to retire ZAPro...

Cas, thank you.

Can someone please make a sticky of this thread ? I have been searching a long time for a solution to the crash that happens upon disconnecting from MP servers.

On a sidenote, here is a good replacement firewall:

EDIT: Removing zonealarm didn't help in my situation, could be anything...SQL Server, Coldfusion webserver, Microsoft webserver, ftp server, virusscanner, could be any of the 100+ services running on my home system...
*sighs* the downside of being a webdeveloper :-(
