MP bug? Lose connection when spending money

I'm running into an incredibly frustrating problem with multiplayer right now. It seems like I can buy updgrades or new ships a certain number of times and then every time I try to do anything that involves me buying stuff or paying for ship repairs I get disconnected from the server, I lose the money from the transaction, and the upgrade or repairs are not lost as well. A friend of mine is running the server, so we've tried deleting the server's record of my account, and that seems to fix the problem temporarily, but it comes back eventually. Nobody else has had the problem on his server, so I assume it's my end. Once it happens the first time on the account, I can play the game fine as long as I don't try to spend money. I can do trades, fight, fly around, etc. just can't buy a new ship, new ship equipment or make repairs to the ship at a port.

Has anybody else run into this problem? If so, found a fix yet? This problem really makes multiplayer worthless.

I'm running the game in Win2k on a Thinkpad T23 (S3 SuperSavage video chipset). I'm connecting via the internet. The game is running as smoothly as single player as best I can tell and I haven't had any problems with SP yet.

I've seen this problem once before. With an advanced ship with a lot of weapons that got damaged in a radiation field, attempting to repair the ship took the money but dropped the connection.

It turned out to be a problem in the firmware of the router. Upgrading the router's firmware solved the problem.

If you are running with a hardware router/firewall, I'd suggest making sure the firmware is up-to-date.

hmm... interesting... I guess I had forgotten to mention that my notebook is actually behind an older desktop which is running Win98SE and ICS to a DSL connection... Sounds like the ICS may be the culprit... I guess I'll try hooking my DSL modem directly to the notebook to see if that fixes the problem. If that does the trick, well, I'm gonna be happy to know where the problem is but very upset about my options for fixing it.

Thanks for the response.
