Game Crashes Incessantly

I just bought the full version of Freelancer today. I had previously had the demo and it had worked fine after I adjusted my hardware settings. Now, I am playing the game, and after the Rheinland Cruiser blows up in the first mission, I gain control of the ship for a few seconds before the game crashes. This happens every time I attempt to play, anywhere from 5-30 seconds delay before crash. Can someone please offer me some advice?

System Specifications:
AMD Athlon 2100+
Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb
512mb PC133 RAM
Windows ME
VIA AC'97 Audio
Gigabyte GA-7ZXE Motherboard
DirectX 9.00
60gb Western Digital 7200rpm Hard Drive

Yeah, I had the game freezing or crashing just as the Rhineland ship is blown up. I had read in some threads that there might be a sound card issue. Tried several things, including disabling Direct Sound hardware acceleration. That seemed to fix it. I didin't get anymore crashes. Just to double-check, I re-enabled it and, sure enough I got the crash again. So you could try that. See if it works.

Did you turn down your sound hardware acceleration levels or just disable Direct Sound?

Thank you.

Thanks! I turned down my hardware acceleration levels to emulation in the Direct Sound window and the game runs fine now. I really can't tell any difference in the audio quality.
Moondog: to disable Direct Sound, open DirectX Diagnostic, click on the sound icon, and turn the hardware acceleration level all the way to the left. The window should say that there are no Direct Sound features enabled. This worked for me. I hope this issue is fixed in a future patch.

Changing the level of sound acceleration won't make a difference in the sound quality per se, but if there are a lot of sounds being played at once you may notice a slight delay, for instance a ship's weapons could fire and you hear the sound one or two seconds later.
