If you have to do a mission for Juni or someone, make sure you have completed it. When you are in space, if you press "n" your mission objective will pop up. If nothing shows up then you're done with your mission, and maybe you just need to fly around and make more money?

Hmmm ... the first mission I did for Juni was completed. My mission log
has nothing unusual mentioning.

Does "next level requirement" mean cash? Or does it mean my "worth"
which is listed right above.

I've read somewhere that I have to complete story missions to advance
a level so I have to find Juni again to get ahead?

May be this issue is because I am continuing a save file which was
created by the demo?

If you're using a save file from the demo on the full version, I would restart. If you need to complete a mission to advance levels, underneath the "Next level requirement" it says "MISSION"

You probably hit the nail on the head with your mention of the demo save, I'd imagine thats the problem.

Ok, it might make sense that I have to restart. But one question is still not clear and is not cleared by the documentation, too.

What does the "next level requirement" mean? Cash or "worth"?

What do you guys have standing there when you just advanced a level?
Still "mission" or some money value?

Worth is what you need to advance, not cash on hand. If you advance after gaining worth, and need to complete a mission to proceed, it will say "MISSION." If you advance but need more worth to gain another level, it will display how much worth you need.

I did the same thing as you with using a demo save in the full version. This demo save was clean, no mods or anything. I had approx. 7 hours of playtime invested in this clean demo save.

Does anyone know a way to make the game recognize that I should be level 2 now? I guess if all else fails, I would need to do a player adjustment hack and set my level.
