Demo Texture quality

I don't know, but for some reason I get the impression that my textures are not as detailed as they should be. Looking at the first winning screenshot of the contest, I noticed that the planet looked far sharper than on my computer. I have all the detailed settings maxed out...8x antiostropy, highest quality settings in the Nvidia drivers...what gives?

I would post a picture that I took of the Freelancer intial menu (with the space station and planet in the background), but I don't have any online storage space. The planet looks very blurry and muddled (in comparison) to the abovementioned pic, which instead shows the continents very sharply.

Any ideas?

well, if the person who took that shoot had a Radeon 9700 than that explains why.

Can you please explain why the image would look significantly better on a Radeon 9700? My understanding is that there might be some improvements with respect to AA or antiostropy, but those aspects should not account for the huge difference that I am seeing.

Guys, I just figured it out.

I own a Nvidia Ti4400. Naturally, since it would boost image quality when I am using AA, I checked "Texture Sharpening" in the Nvidia Control Panel.

DO NOT DO THIS!!!

I don't know why, but it really muddles up the planetary textures (at least...not sure about other in game textures, but I really noticed the planets.)

Turning texture sharpening off resulted in a tremendous increase in clarity, sharpness, and detail.

Weird...don't know why this happens, but I'm just glad I fixed it.

Your graphics card actually has a lot to do with texture quality in this game.
Running a Geforce2Go 16MB, I was very disappointed with texture detail on planets at first, too: washed out, no detail... (yeah I know, a notebook is not the world's finest gaming rig). Anyway, seeing the game running on a Gefore4 with 128MB, textures were crisp and detailed. Freelancer obviously determines the space available for textures and uses different texture resolutions automatically. Your video ram also determines if you can run 32bit or just 16bit color depth, it seems.

Thanks for mentioning that Constant. Just as I read your post, I remembered something called that (Texture Sharpening) which was activated...and I had that prob where the planets looked kinda poor.

I'll try it when I get home...look forward to seeing the improvement.
