Radeon slowdowns?

From DA:

During our internal testing we've seen very poor text rendering performance with the latest drivers for various Radeon video cards (i.e. 7000, 7500, 8500 & 9700). Freelancer will lag when various menus are accessed. This is an external problem and future versions of ATI’s catalyst drivers will hopefully resolve this issue. There is a known workaround. You have to adjust the hardware acceleration slider. This slider can be located on the display properties troubleshooting tab. The following steps may be followed:

1. Access the control panel.
2. Choose the Display Properties icon.
3. Select the Settings tab.
4. Click on the Advance button.
5. Locate the Performance tab and you can easily locate the Hardware acceleration slider.
6. Lower this slider by one notch.

Hope that helps...

Hi there,

I have the problem that you have described above...I have a Radeon 9700 Pro with the Cat 3.1 drivers.

Just a quick qtn....When you go into the advance settings of the gfx card there is no performance tab.

All you have are OpenGL and Direct3D tabs with Smartgart etc....

Ah found it...It's under the Troubleshoot Tab!!

This is somewhat irritating. I would like to use the highest settings from my Radeon 9700 Pro. I hope it does indeed get addressed. I didn't buy this video card only to run into problems.

I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered.

Guys,

has anyone tried the Omega drivers? they guy takes the catalyst drivers and fine tunes them...Supposdly he had the OpenGL problem with the first Catalyst 3.0 licked in his drivers.

But i'm not worried, ATI has been pumping out drivers like clock work.

What i do think you need to do (since i don't have the demo working) is go over to www.rage3d.com and post in the catalyst forum, the guy that writes the driver is a regular there, and your gonna get a reply from them, one way or another.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tan Hauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die.

Nat, you have absolutely nothing to worry about with the 9700. I've been using one for months with the one notch fix, and it simply looks and runs beautifully! You can crank all your Direct3d and OpenGL settings to the max, and set all the ingame options up too. There's no degredation of the graphics using the fix, and Freelancer isn't the only game affected. I found this fix when I was reading through some tech sites I like, and they mentioned this fix for Battlefield 1942 and the 9700, so I tried it with FL, and viola, worked perfectly!

Omega's and Plutonium's drivers have been good, but I'm using the Catalyst 3.1's straight from ATI now, seem to be the best at the moment.

Thanks Boscoe. I haven't had any problems in the graphics with Unreal 2 but wasn't so sure if the FL engine would have its own little quirks.

Nice! I was getting worried when I was playing the demo and the menus where killing me. I just put the game on 16 bit color but this seems like a better solution

Thanks guys.

Read about this problem on another post and apparently all the one notch dose is turn on/off hardware mouse acceleration. I’ve got a 8500 and it works fine on some menus but doesn’t on others weird. will try the fix.
