Sound Dies IBM R32 Laptop

I've got freelancer installed on an Ibm R32 Laptop

during gameplay mostly happens when i'm playing online, when it comes to combat my sound dies and won't come back until I restart the game.

Edit: happens in single player also

Windows 2000
P4 mobile 1.6Ghz CPU
512mb ram
SoundMax Intergrated digital audio (driver date 24/09/2001)

I've tried everything including the "how to fix common sound problems topic post"
sound drivers are the lastest official drivers according to the lenovo website (I can't seen to find later ones)
The only thing I haven't tried is upgrading to winxp.

Any suggestions

looks like i've fixed it
Full hardware acceleration in advanced audio properties was causing the problem
