FL Crashes when launching from Planet/Station

Im getting frequent crashes right as the game should load the outside space areas (after your ship takes off, and after you get a mission briefing, if I get one). I have got no idea what is causing it, and WinXP isn't catching it to send in an error report for it. It doesn't happen every time, but it's often enough that I'm not even wanting to play the game much anymore.

I am running my own server on my computer that I also play the game on. Me and my brother play on our LAN and its just him and myself.

Running XP SP2 ?
I have a similar setup and experience more CTDs when launching with new comp with XP SP2.
But:
Most of such crashes are caused by a corrupt file of your game or a corrupt savegame. This can happen with modded and unmodded games.
Backup your savegames, reinstall FL (the way you are told before installing one of the major mods) and try your savegames (if autosave does not work take a earlier save).

If this does not help you may try to run FL in Win2000-compatibility-mode (right-click FL-icon/properties/compatibility)

Ok, I have completely uninstalled Freelancer. I backed up my saves folder, and reinstalled. But here are words from the wise: do not leave backups of FL saves inside your My Documents\My Games\Freelancer directory... oh well, I was planning on starting over and going slower, instead of powergaming anyway. The only bad thing is that my little brother lost his saves. I have yet to see if I still crash when I launch. If I still do, Ill reply whith what mods I run on my server/client.

[edit
Well, now it seems that I get crashes right after the Freelancer loading screen that comes on after those 3 annoying videos that it always plays...

OK, after I deleted all my single player saves, I can run the game without crashing at startup. Ill post back if I get crashing after launching from a planet/station.
Thanks for the help =)

Hit the "escape key" to avoid those "annoying videos".

you're welcome. But oops - if your younger brother is too sad about loosing his SP-savegames then you should try the Character Editor .

I would advise sticking away from editing files - it sounds like a classic symptom of a mod being used to myself (no offense if you aren't using one) - but it bears the hallmarks (especially the reinstall followed by save games causing crashes...).

I have been running XP2 for 12 months - no troubles at all.

Well, I'm getting the crashes again.
Here is what I do when starting up a game:
Launch FLServer with "Battle Ship Encounter Mod" and "Speed 600 Mod"
Launch FLClient with "Battle Ship Encounter Mod"; "Speed 1200 Mod"; and "Ion Thrusters Super"
What I dont get, is my little brother plays at the same time as me, with the exact same mods, and I'm the only one getting kicked out.
I have edited NO files, except whatever FLMM v1.3 needs to do when it does it's thing.
My client and server run on the same computer, but my computer has no problems with it, and only very rarely do I get lag pockets (where the game will slow down, or skip some frames for a very brief time).
Is it because I launch a server with mod setting "A" and then reconfigure it for my client with mod setting "B"?
I like having the beefed up thrusters, because if you dont want to fight a hostile, there is no way to get away from them if they have cruise disruptors, and having faster thrusters lets me and my brother get away when needed.
I'm use to having 1200 as my cruise drive speed, because thats what a server was allowing, but whenever I was at Planet Manhattan, there would be NPC after NPC crashing into the planet, so I lowered the cruise speed for them so they wouldn't do it as much (and they dont either).

Just a side note: it was our MP saves that got deleted (along with my SP saves, but I couldn't care less, I lost track where I was and all that), he has his own computer that he is playing on, and connecting to my computer which runs the server.

oh yeah, and I am running SP2, but I doubt it is the problem: I have played online on this same computer just fine for quite a while now, with no crashing...

Well, it just crashed, again, while I had the server and client running the exact same mod: JUST the "speed 1200" mod. It doesn't seem to care what mods I'm running, just as long as it's pissing me off. I'm close to not playing again....
Is it because I'm running the server on the same computer? I'm completely out of ideas. I just want it to #*%! stop =(

Another update: Seems to have stopped crashing when I put the server on a computer that wasn't connecting to the server. I suppose if it don't crash again, I wont have to post ^_^
Here's to good luck and not crashing. Thanks

Kyonkichi - I am having the *exact* same symptoms as you are! Did moving the server to a different machine eventually help? I'm getting desperate and willing to try anything!

Post Fri Jul 15, 2005 4:24 am

Aye, always use a different comp as server if you are planning on adding more mods for the players.

Post Fri Jul 15, 2005 7:39 am

Why is that, Chips? Howcome when mods are used, the server has to be on its own machine? Thankfully it's not a problem as I had two computers in the house. Figured it would be on my side, too, because anyone else connecting from the internet hasn't reported any problems at all - it was just on my local game install that the game would crash when launching from a planet/station.
