Can''t connect to any multiplayer servers, using two firewal

I am running Windows 2000 on a 1.7 Gig computer. I can now finally play Freelancer on full graphic setting and not suffer much lag or hits in the framerate, but now that I have my router hooked up I can't seem to connect to any Freelancer multiplayer server.

When I try to connect, it freezes up, then says "Please wait, the requested operation is taking longer than expected." It stays on that for about four minutes then says that a connection could not be established to that server. It does that for any server I try to connect to. And that is about all the information I know.

The Micro$oft help page says I need to configure my router to open up certian ports or something like that, but I don't know how to access my router to do it. I am using Stop-Sign and Norton firewalls.

If anyone knows how to acces the router settings to open up the ports or something like that, please let me know. And please don't use a bunch of technical talk, acromyms and computer language. I don't know what most of those mean.

And I know this is a little off topic, but does anyone know how to tell how powerful my graphics card is? I know I can run Freelancer on full graphics and not lose many FPS (Frames Per Second for those of you who don't know). I want to see if my computer can play Unreal Tournament 2004 or 2005. And maybe Painkiller or Quake 2.

you simply won't be able to configure your router properly without learning *some* of the jargon, best bet is to search google for specific instructions for your routers EXACT model.that said you can play freelancer behind an unconfigured router with no problems usually so I would try disabling software firewalls first

there is a world of difference between freelancer and ut2k4,and even within unreal tournament your specs will have a large variablility with map size(memory & processor),model polys & texture detail(graphics),and how many people are playing(your connection).also we can't tell you anything about how your card will perform without knowing what card it is.painkiller and quake 2 should run fine if freelancer is running smoothly

Ok well I'm almost positive my problem is the router. I was using both Norton and Stop-Sign firewall before I had the router and everything was fine, I just don't know how to access the router's configuration from the computer and open up the ports I need to let Freelancer connect to the internet.

And could anyone tell me how to see what my graphics card is? I checked the min system req. for UT2K4 and you need at least a 32 meg graphics card. I can run Freelancer on full graphics but I don't know if my graphics card is a 32 or above. And I'll go look up the sys. reqs. for Painkiller now, as I already know Half-Life 2, Doom 3 and Far Cry are out of the question for me.

right click on an empty space on your desktop and click properties, select the Settings tab and you're videocard's model & brand will appear after "Display:".If you are running freelancer on full resolution and performance settings i guarantee you have more than 32mb onboard video ram.

like i said, find the model number on your router(usually on the bottom starting with letters and ending in numbers and sometimes another letter) and do some googling for specific setup instructions.typical things that need to be enabled are NAT,port forwarding, and gaming DMZ.yeah i know its jargon, just keep enabling everything until you have freelancer connected good luck Freelancer, and may the farce be with you

most routers (like mine) operate on 10.1.1.1 which can be pluged into a web browser...

but if it's a really good 1 you'll need to telnet into it, but i got no idea how to.....
