Freeze when Exiting Multiplay

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Freeze when Exiting Multiplay

Whenever I exit a multiplayer server to go back to the server list or the main menu, Freelancer freezes up and I can't use Ctrl+Alt+Del or Alt+Tab to get out of it, and my computer won't shut down on it's own, so I have to pull the plug.
I've tried reinstalling Freelancer (no help) and uninstalling WinXP SP2 (no help either). I've upgraded my graphics card, and tried it without any mods running. Yet the game still crashes when I exit. I am forced to shut the game down without exiting a server, which is annoying because the server thinks I'm on for awhile after (players see me leave 5 mins after I shut FL down) and sometimes my info doesn't save.
Has anyone else ever encountered the problem?

I would ensure that Direct X is the newest stable one you can have (9.0b or c) first.

You mention you updated your graphics card - but don't say if it used to be stable before (with your old one)...which would give a large clue as to what the problem is...
Are the graphics drivers are the most modern possible, have you tried re-updating those, and then applying for some help from them too? What graphics card are you running etc...as strange issues like this can be from graphics cards/drivers issues... If its a radeon card, they have a fairly comprehensive sort of help thing going on - where they will email you with issues to try to fix it (although this appears to be a generic email for any problem involving their cards and games!).

Actually - what card are you running, and also how powerful is your PSU (power supply unit). It could be that you don't have enough ampage on the '12v rail' as its called, causing it to crash. Have you also checked out the graphics card manufacturers site for support on their forums? Although you may not get employed 'techies' helping out, you do get some exceesively knowledgeable people who will give suggestions.

You have made many good points. I don't actually know what a PSU even is. However, if my graphics card can run the game perfectly (the only problem is when i exit a server), why should it crash at that moment? But hey, I don't really understand my computer, so...
I have an Intel 82845G Graphics Controller, and the problem began ocurring before I updated it. I have DirectX 9.0c, and Windows XP (Home Edition) Service Pack 2. My processor is a Pentium 4 2.0gHz, and I have 512MB DDR RAM. The only reason why I am liable to blame the intel graphics controller is because every game I have (with the exception of some older ones) have a problem with it some way or another. I usually have to use modified files with games the make them run. HOWEVER! Freelancer was running perfectly fine for the first 6 months that I had it.

Okay, I reinstalled Freelancer and made NO MODIFICATIONS WHATSOEVER to it. I didn't install the SDK or anything. I ran it, and it crashed when I exited a server running no mods.

So it's definitely NOT Freelancer's fault, the poor thing...

Ummmm, if my graphics controller is crashing it when it exits a server, why shouldn't it do the same while I'm exiting Single Player? Just curious.
