game crash when flying a few minutes in space

Hello everybody!

Before I explain what's going on, please allow me to make clear that I have checked almost every single topic in the "Freelancer Technical Issues" board (this board) concerning my problem.

What I found in those topics (about 15 to 20 topics) is that alot of people with relatively new video cards crash out of Freelancer or have a sudden computer restart.

I just got a new pc, Intel Pentium 4 HT processor with 512 Mb RAM and a GeForce 6610 XL video card, 3400 Mhz processing speed. Windows XP Home Edition with SP2...
I have a legal version of Freelancer which I used to play on my older pc (which had a GeForce 2 MX). The game worked perfectly on that old pc. I never had lag or bad FPS, it just worked perfectly.

I installed Freelancer on my new pc, hoping to play on my favorite Jolt server again. When I first started I got the infamous "Video card is not recognized"-message (you all probably know what I mean). I clicked continue, having one of the newest cards currently available, therefore feeling safe. After having configured my settings, I connected with the Jolt server.

I started on planet Manhattan, looked around a bit (like 5 minutes or so) and then I launched into space. After just 2 minutes in flight the game froze for like 2 seconds and suddenly my pc restarted.
I tried launching Freelancer again, I connected to Jolt, went into space... and the same thing happened... And a third time! I went to the Microsoft tech support page. There's a way to prevent your pc from restarting when you have a system error. I did that.

So I went back to Freelancer. I just selected a random multiplayer server which I could join but after 2 - 3 minutes of flight the game froze. This time I had a beautiful error message (because I disabled auto-restart). It's all in Dutch so I didn't translate it yet (I live in Holland if you want to know) but I noticed something about a video card driver.

This pc is about two weeks old, but just to be certain I checked my driver and DirectX version... ForceWare v66.93 and DirectX v9.0c...

I tried tons of things, including:
-A "clean" startup of my pc (execute "msconfig"...)
-Cranking down hardware acceleration by TWO notches (as suggested by a topic)
and tons and tons more...

In the few minutes I managed to play I detected no sound problems... I heard dialog, background music, gun sounds, everything and therefore I did not follow instructions displayed in the nine-page stickied topic.

Bottom line: I AM DESPERATE! I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING!

I REALLY REALLY like this game and I REALLY REALLY want to play it again. I've read through 20 topics and I've tried alot of things to NO AVAIL... IT KEEPS FREEZING FOLLOWED BY THIS AWKWARD BULLSH*T ERROR!

Could somebody please help a desperate freelancer?

Edit: Just for the record, one of the latest and most GPU (video card) demanding games, H A L F - L I F E 2, runs smoothly on my pc with almost every setting at maximum. UT2004 runs really great, the Painkiller demo works great, NFSU 2 works great, HALO runs amazing, even DOOM 3 runs pretty good (almost everything at maximum)... So what could possibly be my problem?

Interesting. Do the crashes occur when you play SP as well? If not, then it is possible that it is a network issue (it is unlikely though). Also as you know, nV cards have problems with FL so we may be able to resolve your problem. Still, we'll try . In the meantime, try reinstalling DirectX if you haven't already done so, or even try installing the latest version (9.0c).

I think he has 9.01c

You might try the REFERENCE DRIVERS on the NVIDIA SITE that are for your chipset regardless of the card's manufacturer.

If that does not work, you might hold your breath and get a full install copy of XP Pro and wipe your drive and install that. I'd avoid the upgrade version.

I know I'll get flamed for this but XP HOME gives problems with Freelancer in my experience.
Service Pack 2 gave me problems as well but others have no problem with it.
I use an ATI 9800XT PRO 50 AGP

The only driver for my chipset I can find on nvidia.com is nForce. Is that the one you mean?

By the way, I tried singleplayer, and here's what happened: I got past all intro movies, even past the "That's the Donau" one. After the ship got blown up I had to kill the Order ships. So I engaged them, and after roughly two or three minutes... you guessed it...

I also tried reinstalling DirectX 9.0c, but since it's already on my system it refused to install. After the "I accept this licence" thingy the program told me the installation was complete (but I never saw a progress bar). But this must be because my DirectX version is already up to date...

Look:
http://a.1asphost.com/msjm/system.JPG

It's part of my 3DMark05 Pro v1.1.0 benchmark table. And as you can see, the DirectX version is 9.0c...

As the problem occurs with SP as well, it is most likely a problem with your graphics card. As Glock suggested, if you have an "nforce" chipset then install the latest AGP drivers which you should be able to download from nVidia.com. Tell us if it makes a difference.

Sorry for the late reply (I was ill).

This might be a stupid question, but how do I know if the nForce drivers will work with my chipset?

The nForce drivers are STRICTLY for nForce- based motherboards, and atm, they are all AMD Athlon boards, so no- they are not for you.

Go here. This menu has the latest version of the GeForce drivers, including the 6 series. (currently 66.93)

Here is the direct link to the driver download page.

BTW, I have a Dell Inspiron laptop with the GeForce Go 5200, and have no problems with FL.
