Connection problem

I know that there is a post for firewall problems but idont think this has anything to do with my firewall.

When i try to connect to global server it doesnt.
Even with Zonealarm off it doesnt work.
Also, the direct connect program doesnt work for me either.
This never happened before when i had ISDN. Now i have broadband and freelancer isnt connecting.

My net works fine and my other games are working perfectly too but freelancer just isnt working.
Anyone got some ideas why?

and another thing. ive downloaded the 1.1 update but my freelancer says its still 1.0.
Could this have any connection with my other problems?

ZoneAlarm has a nasty habit of still leaving it's firewall installed and running even though ZA was told to exit. Look for the ZA executable in the task manager (I misremember the name). Or disable the ZA start when starting the 'puter option and reboot.

The FL update/patch is ONLY for servers! Installing it on a client only install may produce unwanted issues. (there are dozens of posted issues mentioning the patch is for servers only and the issues that arise from client-side patchs) And yes, installing the patch does nothing for the displayed version numbers, both in the client and the server. For example nearly every server out there on the FL global server list has the patch yet they all show as version 1.0.

sooooo what do i do about the update? leave it there? il try out what you said about zonealarm and get back to u

If you never intend on using your installation of FL as a server then I suggest you remove the patch. The only way to do it is uninstall FL, then reinstall FL without the patch.

If you have already started new FL MP characters on any server remember to print out your FL MP ID#. No server admin can retreive that for you.

Yeh il reinstall freelancer.

Its wierd though, it seems that my ID code is the same everytime that i reinstall the game.

Im not going to be making a server so il get rid of the patch.
But even before i had the patch it wasnt working right.
Ive tried it with zonealarm off totally and my pcs clean of viruses.
The windows firewallisnt on either.
Any solutions?

Zone Alarm is not a software firewall. It is a virus. You must remove it by formatting your hard drive and reinstalling windows. This is the only way to totally get rid of it and I'd bet my bottom dollar that Zone Alarm is causing your problems.

Do not apply the 1.1 patch unless you are going to run a server.

Zone Alarm is a virus? Would you care to clarify that Glock?

Post Mon Nov 01, 2004 7:17 am

If you are using a newer version of Zone Alarm older then 4.5.594 you are going to run into problems...I build computers for a living and have run into big headaches with the latest version of Zone Alarm. Hopefully you still have your older version (4.5) on your hard drive.
Just un-install the new version and go back to version 4.5 and you shouldn't have any problem.
If you don't have the older version any more contact me and we'll see what we can do to get you up and running again.

Glock, most people don't think on your level (brilliant) remember

Post Mon Nov 01, 2004 9:19 am

Yeh, my one is the newest version i think

And ive checked for updates and there are none so far
Is it really a virus or were u just jokin?

Post Mon Nov 01, 2004 10:25 am

Hehe! I know Glock36 is joking but keep that under you hat. He IS a moderator after all!

The older version of ZA had a firewall file called vsmon.exe (isn't the TLR search forum button nice? This is how I "remembered" it!). Even though you turned off ZA vsmon.exe would still be there firewalling. I used to kill it in the Task Manager or reboot, not cool.

If the newer versions of ZA are more spider-like and insidious, then conceivably it could be so rooted in the OS that it cannot be cleaned out (sort of like IE was during the Netscape trial ) If you are feeling adventurous you could start killing your own account processes in Task Manager until something works but I believe that would be a risky move unless you actually knew what you were killing. Best take Glock36's advice and truely get rid of it once and for all.

Allow me to clarify.
I am a retired networking consultant and Baked is a working network consultant.
Perhaps he is more "Up" on Zone alarm than I am.

To me, a virus is a program that renders your computer inoperable or nearly so.

The older versions of Zone Alarm I worked with did this. I consider Zone Alarm the worst of the Software Firewalls. It was difficult to configure unless you were a computer expert. Perhaps this has changed. I still would not trust it, but better listen to Baked first.

Ah, I understand Glock, but I must disagree with your definition of the word "virus". Technically (at least according to my own mental lexicon), a "virus" must possess a certain maliciousness in terms of its purpose; ie. it is a program designed to cause problems. I doubt that Zone Labs would create a firewall with a malicious purpose. Still, anything is possible . Of course in the end, it's all a matter of semantics.

As for ZA, I have been using it for years, and I have never had any problems. However that could be because I'm an IT man and not an inexperienced home user .

Post Tue Nov 02, 2004 8:24 am

Yeh, im 13 so i dont think il be an IT man soon.

Anyway,il get rid of zonealarm
If it isnt gone then il reboot pc totally, keeps it nice and clean.
Also, my call of duty is acting up, ping jumps from 40 to 999!
May be some connection there.
Anyway, il get rid of zonealarm now
