crash to desktop when levelling up to 3

Everytime i get enough money to level up to the 3rd level the game crashes to desktop. this is regardless of how i earn the money, whether by commodities or bounty's. the only different is if i get the money through commodity trading it crashes as soon as i launch to space, whereas the other scenarios are already in space, so it immediatly crashes.

I am also getting this error.

Information
Athlon 64 2800+
1GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 video card
Onboard sound

The only thing I think I've tried so far has been to lower the sound acceleration, but this has not fixed it.

Also, I am using the FLMM w/ Massive Mod. I will at some point soon get around to playing through stock FL up to this point, to see if its a problem introduced with the mod.

Have tried again w/o Massive Mod and it works fine. Will just have to play without the mod.
