Black Screen

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Black Screen

I tried playing freelancer and when it launches, it just gets stuck at a black screen. If I use the launcher, I click "Play Freelancer," then the big black box shows up in the middle of my screen that says Freelancer in it, then my whols screen changes, like it should, but instead of starting the intro playing, the screen just stays black and doesn't do anything.

I have played this game on this computer dozens of times before, and I don't recall doing anything that should have effected the game files in any way. Unless I accidentally deleted a shared file. I'm going to try reinstalling. Does anyone know if that will work or what the problem is?

Maybe drivers or direct x issues? Unfort i dunno, check your drivers for your graphics card, and ensure you have the right directx version installed too!

I just tried reinstalling, not uninstalling then installing again, though, and nothing changed.

I haven't changed my drivers since the last time I played, and I haven't updated freelancer, so I don't know how drivers would help. I know I haven't changed Freelancer, unless it was unintentional and unknownst to me, and I don't think I've changed my computer in any ways that should affect gameplay, so I'm really confused.

In an effort to troubleshoot the problem, I hypothesized that the place where the game got stuck, the opening cutscenes, might be the source of the problem. So I went into the game files and tried to play the movies, and Windows media player had an error opening, so I went to the Microsoft website and redownloaded it. WMP worked, and so did the game! w00t.
