Resolution Difficulties

HI

Since upgrading to a 17 inch LCD monitor I have been recieving the following message when starting up Freelancer, 'Video Mode Not Supported'/
I've contacted the manufactures and they say that the max resolution for the screen is 1280 x 1024. As far as I know I don't exceed this limit while playing the game, but since the problem occurs before the MS, DA and Intro Movies I believe that the movies reformat the screen to above this. This is just what I think the problem is, I might be wrong.

I would be greatful if someone could tell me a way to change the screen resolution for the game or movies from outside the game (since I can't access it at all) , perhaps there are other methods to sort out this problem?
For the record my monitor is an Hyndai Image Quest L70S.

These are the res the games supports.

1600x1200
1280x960
1152x864(not all cards support this one)
1024x768
800x600

In the Freelancer folder in My Documents, there should be a file called "PerfOptions.ini". Open it in Notepad and down near the bottom is the resolution.

As for the movies, I don't think you can run those in anything other than their display resolution - usually 800x600. You could try renaming the movie files or the folder they're in, and the game may skip them altogether on load. I did this to BF1942 and it worked fine, don't know about this one though.

There is a mod to remove intro videos. Otherwise - open up Freelancer.ini file inside the Microsoft Games/Freelancer/Exe folder - and then you will see

[Startup
movie_file = movies\mgs_logo_final.wmv
movie_file = movies\DA_Logo_Final.wmv
movie_file = movies\FL_Intro.wmv

Put semi colons at the beginning of each line to comment out the vid:

[Startup
;movie_file = movies\mgs_logo_final.wmv
;movie_file = movies\DA_Logo_Final.wmv
;movie_file = movies\FL_Intro.wmv

That will stop em playing for you.
Save file and exit (be careful to ensure its saved correctly as an ini file and not a txt file!!

If you open it and see gobbledygook - saying BINI at some point in it, then download BINI and drag the file onto the bini.exe file. This will "decode" it and make an text file of it called Freelancer.ini.txt

You can now delete the original ini file, open that Freelancer.ini.txt file, make the above changes and click "save as"

Now ensure that it saves as ALL FILE TYPES (*.*) and rename it to Freelancer.ini

Click on save - and the ini file should reappear for you
Delete that old text file of it.

First of all thanks for all your replies!

I have tried disabling the startup movies by using the method that was described previously, but with no result, my monitor supports all the relevent resolutions, and I checked the resolution that its running in also via the method described.

I think I'll have to try reinstalling Freelancer, I hope it works, because if I can't play a $AU90 because of a hardware upgrade I will be annoyed, especially since Freelancer is my favourite game.

Thanks for all your help.

I was able to resolve the problem with the error by rolling back my drivers so some older ones which ran more reliably with my system instead of uprgrading them like the MS tech support suggested.

I still have a problem though since when I play Freelancer my screen only displays around 1/4 of the full image, and only by moving my mouse around do I get to see the other parts. Changing the screen resolution to the recommended one for my particular monitor doesn't help. I'll contact MS and the Hyundai and see what they have to say about it.

If the game doesn't support that resolution...........then there probabily isn't much MS can do for you - because it doesn't support that resolution! Simple really - but all the best anyways.

Yes - i am jealous - i have a 14inch out of focus pile of dung for my monitor. Its at least 8 years old.

No need to be jealous, not much good if it won't work with one of my favourite games.
