install to second directory

one of the methods for installing mods that I saw posted on these forums was to install freelancer to a second directory instead of going thru the painful process of backing up, uninstalling, reinstalling, and then adding sdk, flmm, and the mod.

HOW?

When I attempted to do this - the install program would NOT give me a choice of directories nor let me specify where I wanted it installed. There doesn't appear to be a way to do this. So, someone was talking out of their arse or they have a different version of the program than I do.

'tis better to keep you mouth shut and let those around you think you are an imbecile than to open it and remove all doubt

Okay, first up - you have your VANILLA install right? The one you want to keep CLEAN as a whislte - NO Mods??

For this - do a reinstall of your present game, delete the folder of freelancer, and install - so your 100% clean. Now - once done, and you have complied with all the messages of FL - click on the Freelancer Folder, right click, and select COPY

Now ENSURE that you have DESELECTED the folder by clicking anywhere in the window, and PASTE. It will paste it as "Copy of Freelancer". Once it has finished (it will take some time - its a large game ), right click on the folder named "Copy of Freelancer" and then rename it to CLEAN FREELANCER

Good oh.

Next - go to your desktop. You still have the Freelancer Shortcut - this will still be pointing at your "modded" version that you have. So right click on the icon, and rename it - make it "Freelancer Modded" or something. Once done, navigate back to your "CLEAN FREELANCER" folder, go into its EXE folder, and then right click on the Freelancer icon. Select "Send to desktop (create shortcut icon)" and click it. Now go back to desktop, and you will see the icon saying "Shortcut to Freelancer". Right click on that icon, and rename it - FREELANCER CLEAN

There we are, two installs.

Freelancer Mod Manager will work on the original (modded) version in the Freelancer folder, and your FREELANCER CLEAN folder will remain - well, clean

In the event of a crash on startup, go to my documents/my games/freelancer/accts/single player/ and delete all the files/folders in there - as the modded save games locations will be the same as the clean version save games. I know NOT of a way to seperate the two. Its the autosave usually, but save games can also cause issues.

Have fun

Chips, can it be used for different MP account keys?

Nope - you will still be using the same MP account address.
