Crashing with GeForce FX 5600..

I got the game when it forst came out, played it.. loved it, moved on to other games eventually..
Now i decided to play it again and i can't..
Since then i changed my OS to WinXP (Home edition) and i upgraded my video card from a GeForce 2 to an FX 5600.. and the game won't even run.. at first it wouldn't recognize the card and hang up right after the opening movie, now (after getting the latest driver) i no longer get the warning message, but the game still freezes up right after the movie, except now i see the 'Freelancer' splashscreen as opposed to just a black screen..
Any ideas?

Did you do a clean format and reinstall when you switched to XP? It's always the best way. If you just instaled XP overtop your old OS and file system, then it's almost guaranteed to screw something up.

Sadly, yes..
I formatted my HD before installing XP.. and btw, i obviously don't have any Mods installed, just the original Freenacer vr 1.00

There have been numerous problems with nV cards. Have you tried searching the forums for the recommended fixes which we have posted in the past?

Yes, i did.. and there was one person with the same (very similar) problem and as far as i can tell no one could help him with his FX 5600 either..
I guess I have to switch video cards if i want to play Freelancer again..

Well if you have tried all of the standard fixes, I can't suggest much.

I was hoping that DirectX 9c will help, it didn't..

I doubted that it would; it doesn't appear to be a Directx problem. Hmm, I may have asked this, but have you tried playing with the hardware acceleration settings using "dxdiag"?

I encountered a similar problem with the Geforce FX 5700.

The game would freeze right after I got to the FL main menu, I never coul dfix it, but when I installed the software for the Ed glass (adverterised on TLR). the problem stopped, even when the glasses were deactivated.

I had lots of problems with GeForce FX series cards and FL. when I changed to ATi all my problems went away. I passed the card onto my son, installed it for him, and he's played FL no problem at all. Go figure.

having said that, i was o-cing the FX card when I was using it, but it only caused me a prob in FL.

Always meant to post to this thread and forgot.

I had a GeForce Ti 3 that ran great but it was getting a bit long in the tooth. So I got a GeForce FX 5600. Had no issues with my older motherboard. When I upgraded to an nForce2 Biostar m/b had all kinds of FL issues. Thought it was the video card but I DO have a 20% CPU overclock so maybe it was that. Went from 1.675 vdc to 1.8 vdc CPU voltage, single to dual channel on the memory bus and used Nvidia WHQL drivers only (not the latest drivers). Now I have no issues. Not sure why all three of those changes had to be in effect for FL to run smoothly but after many changes, reboots and retrys, it turned out this was the only way that worked.

Basically my GeForce FX 5600 works fine, now.

The only way I was able to play Freelancer with this card was to revert back to the 45.33 Detonator drivers. After doing that the game ran flawlessly. I guess sometimes it doesn't pay to continuosly upgrade drivers if everything you are doing is working well.

Hope this helps.
