Dual Modem Connection

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Dual Modem Connection

I tried but haven’t managed to find an answer to this one.

I used to be on ADSL in NZ but moved to Indonesia. Where I am staying ADSL isn’t available and a 56k connection will allow me to log on to most servers most of the time but if I move even a little bit I loose the connection.

I am on win2k, which allows multiple dial-up connections, and so does my service provider here. I could install another modem and theoretically double my bandwidth. What I don't know is whether FL is geared to take advantage of this or if there are any other known issues with this kind of a setup.

Has anyone tried this and with what kind of results? Do you know if it is even theoretically possible?

I wouldn't recommend it. Although it may be possible to possess two accounts, unless the ISP(s) give your computer the same IP, only one connection will work. Of course, you could try installing a network card so that you can have two IPs assigned at once, but I doubt that it would work. I'm on a 56k modekm myself. I *feel* your pain .

From what I understand reading win help You only need one account, one dial-up connection and you tick two modems for it. The system dynamicaly operates both. I checked with the ISP and they say they have it enabled.

This is what Win2k help has to say about it:

Configuring multiple device dialing

The Network and Dial-up Connections feature performs PPP Multilink dialing over multiple ISDN, X.25, or modem lines. The feature combines multiple physical links into a logical bundle and the resulting aggregate link increases your connection bandwidth. To dial multiple devices, both your connection and your remote access server must have Multilink enabled.

Network and Dial-up Connections can dynamically control the use of multilinked lines. By allocating lines only as they are required, thereby eliminating excess bandwidth, you can realize a significant efficiency advantage. You can configure the conditions under which extra lines are dialed, and underused lines are hung up, through Network and Dial-up Connections settings.

Hmm, well if the ISP(s) support it, then it should be ok. Still, you would only be getting a throughput of between 10 and 12 kbps. That's not very much, and FL may not like it. Still, it might be worth a try. I'd be interested to see how well it works if you decide to go through with it.

The idea of posting here was to see if any FL player has tried it so I dont waste cash on another phone line and modem.

If I end up doing I will definitely post the results.

There is plenty of info on this available if you know how to look for it and it looks like it's all good news. For anyone interested use Google and serch for
"modem teaming" or
"modem bonding"
