Sorry no joystick for you the game doesn't support joysticks only the mouse.

but it is still the best game out there.

If you would read the forums more you would see that you need these tools to make joystick work with Freelancer
1 a big hammer
2 crowbar
3 cutting torch
4 welder with small welding rods
5 crazy glue (to repair damage to wasted joystick you bought for Freelancer because Freelancer never did or will support a joystick)
then take 2 and call me in morning and then

I have gathered the tools suggested but need a bit more detailed instructions on how exactly to install the mod. Is there a file posted somewhere I can just click on and it will do it all for me?

If the saitek software supports it, remap the axis to emulate keystrokes. It works for the logitech series.

If it doesnt support it, buy a logitech or just settle for the mouse.

Just my $0.02, but it could just be the cardamine talking.
