Refuses to Load

Urm..Heya.

I was just wondering if someone could help me with this.

Basically, I start up FreeLancer...It shows the splash screen, then the black screen before the movies, and then, there's not hard disk activity, and the program stops loading and hangs.

I've formatted my my computer, and hence, re-installed FreeLancer. The problem still occurs. On a side note, it only started after I sent my computer for maintenance.

Here are the system specs.

P4 2.4B
Gigabyte GA-8IHXP Mobo
256 MB PC-1066 RDRAM
Maxtor HDD
GeForce 4 Ti4200
SB Live!
Win 98 SE.

All drivers are updated. Detonator 44.03, SB Live! drivers, and running DirectX9.0a.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: FreeLancer is at version 1.0

Nice computer.

I wouldn't be surprised if the problem was the Windows 98 SE.

Not sure.

My specs are
598 mhz
320 mb pc 133 ram
Radeon 9000
(The old) Sound Blaster
and Windows XP Prof.

This computer is from 2001 and it still runs well....and Freelancer works.
Everything I have on these is worse than your computer except for the Operating System...but the chances of the problem being that is low.

So, I am not sure.
(Radeon 9700 is better than GeForce 4)

Hello,

Actually I have a same problem. (kind of)...

I installed the Freelancer at my work on a Windows XP op sys and is working fine, but.. when I have tryied at my home, well.. it crashes.
I run the game and all I get is a blank screen that never changes. (I dont even get the intro movie)
My system specs are bellow:
XP 1800+, 256 DDRAM, GeF4 MX 440 - 128 MB RAM, HDD Maxtor 40Gb... etc.
I mention that I have the latest updates on everything on that computer, video/audio drivers, directX, matherboard drivers, video codecs, all are updated. I have tryied to install Freelancer at a friend who has the same Windows 98 SE, and pretty much the same hardware configuration and it works..
But at my home... blank... doh..

Anywone can help us?
Thank you.

Hi. We are not the only ones to have this problem because having scanned numerous forums and postings, there are a lot of us going nowhere with Freelancer because of this identical problem. It worked fine on my old video card but as soon as I upgraded to a Geforce 4 T14200 128mb 8X AGP ( ironically so I could get the best out of the game), the problem started. I have tried everything recomended in the Microsoft support FAQ's and have installed the latest drivers, Direct X 9a etc and all my other games work fine. I have spoken to Microsoft tech dept who told me Freelancer wont work with the latest Nvidia Detonator driver 44.03 and that it will definitely work with the older driver 41.09, so I downloaded it and guess what, it still wont work and I must say I am getting hacked off by it all.

Surely it cant be all our Pcs that are at fault, so it must be down to Microsoft or Nvidia to put it right but where do we start - Has anyone any ideas? I just cannot believe that I am lumbered with the latest game with the latest video card but am unable to play it. Has anyone had the same problem and managed to get Freelancer to work, if so please please be good enough to send in your answer. My O.S is Windows 98 - Athlon XP1700 528mb RAM

Could it be vid cards? Newer cards seem to be having problems with Freelancer more then the olrder ones (ie. Radeon 9700s having problems, 9000s working fine)

Probably not, FreeLancer ran fine before.
On a side note though, it might be the drivers, I'll check it out and see what goes.

Further to my previous message, I have at last managed to get Freelancer to work. First I tried installing older WHQL drivers but that did not work, so I reinstalled 41.09 but this time I left off the Nvidia Nview facility and although I still get the 'Freelancer does not recognise your 3D video card', I click 'yes' to go ahead and lo and behold, Freelancer starts up no prob. I hope this works for you too but just to make sure this is not just a dream, would you care to try it and post again if it proves successfull. It would be nice to know this was the cause of the problem just in case it happens again. My OS is Win 98 se 528mb RAM, Athlon XP 1700, Winfast GeForce 4 Ti4200 128mb, 8X AGP. Ironically enough, I have been trying to get this game going for so long now its all a bit of an anti climax!!!

Here are my system specs.
P 1.2 Ghz
256MB RAM
Geforce 3 video card
SB Live
Win 98 SE

Ok. Here's the problem. I know that Freelancer works, because I was playing it before on this same machine. After reformatting the computer I can no longer play the game. When I install Freelancer, it installs fine until I hit the accept EULA and then it goes straight to a black screen and locks up the computer.
Any ideas on what to do? With the reformat I know I don't have all of the video and audio codecs that was there before. Thanks in advance

Yep it's me.
Who else would it be.

I had this problem to, but got rid of it after hardmoding freelancer with the rebalanced mod, now I to it allways with the NG mod.
My suggestion is that a Update I with the Windows Update Program the system changed something, so that one dll is not working correct anymore. Maybe the dll used a security hole to work fine (a lot of programms are using bugs in the os to work better(was so in Win95, don't know how it was after Win95)) und a security patch fixed the bug and now a command can't be executed.
Can somebody try to reinstall WinXP and freelancer and if it works it was a patch from MS that screwed up Freelancer.
When I'm not totally wrong I thing it happend to me after installing the newest media player 9 or were it the .net things? can't remember any more

Thanks for the response. I barely can use mods much less figure out how to hard MOD something. The killer is that the computer that I use for games is one without an internet connection so I have a difficult time getting the updates to 98SE. I am working through the process as I type. Hope I can come up with something as MS is slow to answer.

Yep it's me.

I have a similar problem. When I go to launch freelancer the small box appears that says Freelancer, then there is no activity after that. It doesn't go to play the movies.

I've noticed that for me, this is because the previous time I played the game and exited, for some wierd reason it stays in RAM. For me, all I have to do is hit ctrl+alt+del and then click on Freelancer.exe in the Task Manager and hit End Task. The .exe goes away and I can load up Freelancer normally.

Though I can't find a way to completely rid myself of the problem this is just a minor annoyance, at least I can play the game but still, it isn't the way it was meant to be.

It started happening when I upgraded to XP. Before XP I had that odd text problem, don't any more.

hi never had problems before with this great game it run perfectly on my radeon 9100 128 mb video card i play it at 1154x968 it runs grreat (32 bits) i have an anthlon xp 1900+

The problem is in the Nvidia 44.03 drivers.

Two solutions are possible :
A) Update DirectX to 9.0b from Windowsupdate.
Downgrade the 44.03 drivers. Driver archive on the downloadpage for the current Nvidia driver contains all the previous Nvidia drivers.

B. regards

I don't think the drivers are the problem, the game was running fine for me at first and now it crashes to desktop just b4 the menu screen....the only way I can play atm is modded
