Presumably you've read around these postings.
I am now using a GF4 Ti4200, and have had nothing but trouble. however, i cannot say for certain what is causing it.
Previously I was using an GF4 MX460. Which worked since purchase without a single crash. EVER. But that was on a different machine.

I can tell you that both looked pretty much identical graphically. Performance wise too, i couldn't tell any difference.

I've never used a Radeon, but there seem to be just as many compatibility issue with it from reading the various forums (fora, Forae ??).

Hope that helps.

What ever you get wont Run at full speed cause your cpu will be a bottle neck. Time for a new mobo/cpu AND video etc.

You could waste your money on a ATI 9800pro but it will run badly as the better GPU's need a semi decent cpu to keep them running well enough. Even at GF4Ti 4200 will be crippled by your current cpu.

I use a Geforce 3 Ti200 128mb and have had no problems with it! They're pretty cheap now too.

ATI without a doubt. their fps is much bigger and no noise and very i mean very stable i am using a radeon 9800 pro it's expencive but it's a bang for your buck i could advize a radeon 9700 pro it's cheaper and beats gforce 4 ti 4800 ultra on every graphics and it's cheaper.

but whatever you do DO NOT buy a gforce FX card they have huge technical problems and they are not constructed correctly..

dont let mhz's fool you gforce has more only has half the preformance of a radeon.
also with fsaa and anti aliasing radeon beats gforce 2

i have a beauty of a computer
pentium 4 3,06 ghz
radeon 9800 pro
dual channeled 2x 258 mb ddr

this is the system you need.

BUT ENOUGH TOUCH TALK.... GET A RADEON

I've got a Pny geforce ti 4200 and FL runs fine on this, I get about 85fps but this drops as low as 30fps in tradelanes, and the game runs this at 1024*768/32 with quincux anti-aliasing and 8x anisotropic filtering, For £100 this card is brilliant. And overclocks nicely too, can get it upto 307/613 from the 250/550 default, but i do have a 120mm fan blowing over the geforce from my side window, so that helps to cool things down.
Athlon XP 2000+
512mb pc2100 (cas 2)
Asus A7v8x m/board
10 speaker surround sound (from modified pro logic amp) and SB live value.
win Xp home +sp1
det 43.45
direct x 9.0

I'm currently using a Radeon 9000 pro 128mb, and frankly, I've enver been hapier. Its great for games like Freelancer, and it has some of the nicest graphics I've seen. My card before was a Nvidea (tnt2, model 64) and when I got it (nearly 6 months ago roughly) it was in the 150-250 range (Canadian dollars, not amaerican) but the prices have likely lowered since the release of the 9800. If you want something that runs fine, nicely, and can be overclocked nicely (You can overclock safely without a fan to about 1/4 of what it can do, otherwise, get a fan or you risk burning it out) and can get res capable of over 2000 x some other larger number (not sure what exactly, a friend told me about it). I currently run it at 1280x1024 true color, and its nice =)

Ti 200 with 128megs and no problems at all.

I would suggest a Radeon 9500.. either pro or non-pro works excellent. It beat the GF4 series and can be easily modded if you have the non-pro to a 9700.

I don't want to start a flame war about ati-vs-nvidia, but personally i prefer the geforce range of cards because of the excellent drivers support on nvidia's website, the fact that they release reference drivers every few months is a great asset considering how hard it is to find a driver that runs all the latest games reliably and quickly.
In my experience Ati is very slow to release new drivers, therefore if you have a problem with a game such as deformed textures or texture ripping (which seems to be Ati's forte) then you only have the option to wait until Ati bring out a new driver which fixes the problem.
I have a friend who bought a radeon 8500 (a while ago) and when he experienced some flashing textures and texture deformities in some of his games, He immediately went to Ati's website to download the latest driver, He found that the latest driver was actually the one he was using, And he had to wait 5 months before Ati released a new driver that fixed these problems, In that time Nvidia released 3 drivers.

Your best bet in the end is to find out whether your current config works best with an Ati card or an Nvidia card, Some m/boards have known issues with either Ati or Nvidia cards, So find out what suits your pc best.

<oni> I'm not flaming you but I really like NViDIA as well. But lately I have noticed how quickly ATi has been about releasing drivers. I think they are the choice card these days. The FX would be a complete waste of money. Also notice how games are being supported by Nvidia but now ATi is starting to support games more too. IE: Half-Life 2, look for ATi to take the cake in video cards soon unless Nvidia has something up their sleeves...
