Assigning/using wps groups

I have tried to assign, activate, and fire weapons groups. Can't make this work. Use F1/Controls/User Interface to Assign Wpns Grps and /Ship Interface to Activate, I think. Anyway, does someone know how this feature really works. Pls help with instructions.
