Random Crash to Desktop - a solution

Hello forum from a sunny Cape Town!

I run Freelancer on a GeForce 4 card. Latest everything (Win98SE), plenty of hardware and a random crash to the desktop has been drving me nuts! I could (for instance) never even consider taking a trade route with more than 2 jumps. Would'nt get there. Will crash out to the desk!!!

Tried everything, even talking to MicroSquish. As usual, they are hopeless, thinking that all people with problems with their games are low foreheaded... Well, I am not - have also been messing around with PC's and games for a long time (IT proff for close on 30 years now).

I finaly solved my problem - this is how:

1. Disabled all SOUND acceleration in DirectX (Run DXDIAG, all sound tags - acceleration turned off);

2. Setup the game resolution to: 800 x 600 x 16 ("Options" button in Freelancer);

The solution is working for me and I am now able to go anywhere and play the game without crashing...

I thought that others here might just benefit from this.

I have same problem - random crashing to desktop (in SP). I managed to complete the missions this week - but someimes it was hell having to re-do something (like Tekagi's Arch) because it crashed seconds before I could dock and save.

I'm running on an Athlon 2800+ (Barton), with Dual (2x)512Mb Crucial mem, on ASUS A7N8X Mobo (nForce2). I'm using the 6/5.1 audio on the mobo. (Mobo rev 1.06 or something, BIOS 1002.A)

Also have brand new ATI Radeon 9800 PRO with latest Catalyst drivers (3.2)

Running on XP

To be honest - I don't want to play if I have to reduce res to 800x600 and turn off all 3D audio etc (I tried on 1024x768 with 3d Audio off - but still crashed)
The whole point of this set-up is that I should be able to play at 1600x1200 with all the bells and whistles!

Anyone have a similar setup to me who _doesn't_ get crashes to desktop?

Bill

Current specs:
P3 1.1 ghz, ATI Radeon 7000 (yeah yeah, its old but it was cheaper and it will run on my mobo...)Catalyst 3.2, 256 megs ram, windows 98se, latest drivers for everything..

if you have a via chipset, try getting the latest 4n1, its called hyperion i believe...you could also try this..

Start ->
Run ->
Type msconfig ->

then click on the advanced button down on the bottom right, there should be a box "Limit Memory to" Enable the box and set the amount to 128 (its the minimum FL needs) I did that and i have been playing FL fully loaded! all detail, full sound acceleration, and graphics acceleration!! Full game performance!!
