-some people say that 43.45 suck and have some problems..
-I myself tried download the files like 3 times and when installing them always some nasty corrupted file thingy happens... im through dl'ing this junk..
-im still using 30.00 coz its my original of-the-box driver with no problem...

argh.. im never gonna get paid.. goodbye a million credits..

Ajim's right, the 43.45 drivers a bit buggy. Ive got a Ti4200 and had all sorts of problems after I updated the driver to 43.45. Try the previous driver 41.09 - it's available on the nvidia site on the driver archive page. Thats the one I'm using just now and it's working 5 by 5.

Well, heres my experience...

I bought the game last Saturday and installed that afternoon. When I initially started the game after reboot, I also received the "Freelancer does not recognize your video card" message. I click right past it and began to play without a problem.

I played solid for 2 days.

On Monday afternoon, after work, I came home and fired up the game. I played for about two hours and then, all of a sudden, crashed to desktop. I thought it was no big deal, but after starting the game back up and playing for 5-10 minutes, it did it again.

I tried three more times before I started searching freelancer boards for an answer (all those nice friendly sites Microsoft offers at the Freelancer site - This being one of them). I saw that numerous people were seemingly having problems and the two major issues were sound and video. The video was pretty much specific to nVidia cards, more appropriately the GeForce cards. So, I was relatively sure that was my issues, as I sport a GF 4 Ti4200.

So, I checked my drivers and noticed I hadnt updated yet, had the 4.1.0.9 driver. The funny thing is, alot of people were saying the 4.3.4.5 driver was screwing them. So I thought long and hard about updating, especially when I considered I really wanted to finish the game. However, I for sure wasnt going to be playing under the current situation, so I updated to 4.3.4.5. Knowing I could always goto the nVidia archives and revert back to the latter.

While I was at it, I updated my sound drivers and my cd-rom drivers. Now Im in business, right? Wrong.

I fire the game up and not ten minutes later, crash. So, I use a failsafe option, I uninstall and re-install the game. But wait, as I am re-installing it comes up with an error message saying I have a cab1.cab file corrupted. This happened three more times while I tried frantically to figure out wtf was going on.

The reason it only happened three times instead of 5, 10, 20, or 30 is...
on the third re-install attempt my computer rebooted on its on, while installing the game. So, I decided to give up for the night and started to do other things (not play games) like check email and stuff, ya know.

Guess what, computer crashed on me while I was checking email. Now Im guessing my OS has been corrupted somehow, but how?

Anyway, I manually reboot the system, only this time Ive lost my signal to the video card. I cant see a freakin thing! The card is not responding. Im getting light up, Im getting the sound of the fans, everything but video...

Its Wednesday and my computer is still down. Hmmm, wonder how that happened?

Try 43.51 at www.guru3d.com/files. I have heard lots of negative feedback on the 43.45s, too.

Have you reinstalled Freelancer since changing video cards? This could be part of the problem, as a lot of problems similar to this have been solved by a simple reinstall.

Ok, I should mention that in addition to the apparently much-hated 43.45 drivers, I have indeed also tried the 41.09 drivers and I get the EXACT same problem.

Also, a quick search on Google Groups told me that I am not the only fool with this exact problem.

I have NOT yet tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, but I am not convinced that is a good course of action, and I don't want to risk losing my saved games etc. (When I uninstalled the DEMO I told it not to erase my saved games, but when I installed the retail version my saved demo games were not there... doing that over again was enough fun, much less how far along I am NOW.)

Saved demo games are not compatible with the retail anyways. That's probably why.

I agree to give the 43.51 WHQL drivers from guru3d.com a try. The 43.45 drivers did seem a bit unstable. I have experienced nothing but positive things with the 43.51's and Freelancer. Let us now how they work with your setup.

Update: I've now got the 43.51 WHQL drivers from guru3d and I've also got DX9.0a (had 9.0 before).

I still have the garbled screen on ALT-TAB or exit, but I've figured out how to get the screen back in a couple of other ways (see the other threads on this). Once I've got it ok, I can ALT-TAB to my hearts content until I exit Freelancer and restart it.

Now if I only I could get the story line to pick back up (there IS a mission 14, right?)....

OMG you do not know how happy this thread has made me. this has been the fix i have been looking for at least 2 whole months. No where on the net could i find any solution. sadly it came a little late and my mom hid my FL cd, she was tired of me crashing the game. I hope i can find it....
