Crashing at startup

I'm trying to run Freelancer on my IBM R40 laptop.
It's got an Ati Mobility Radeon 7500 with 32MB and the latest IBM drivers and I'm running XP with servicepack 1a and directx 9a.
(Ati doesn't provide reference drivers for their laptop chips)
The driver version is 7.79.7.3.4.

When starting the game the screen goes black for a while, then I'm thrown back into windows and I get the "Freelancer has encountered a problem and needs to close." message.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or got any tips?
I saw that some people get stuck and has to reboot, but I can still use my computer after the crash.

I to have the Radeon 7500, but I added one or two modifications to the game. These were having 700K credits at start of game, being able to get the baddest equipment availble, along with going to all sectors of Sirius. Now I am stuck at Lvl.16 before the fight with Lord Tenaga (?). Every time I get a contract kill mission, anywhere, and kill all the bad guys my game kicks me out to Desktop saying that a problem has occurred with FL and that a report has to be sent to Microsoft . . . sorry about that. Maybe MS/DigitalAnvil put a no Mod code in the software in the hope that we would buy the most high end gaming platform made. It looks like I will have to uninstall FLMM and the others and restart the game getting my butt kicked all over Sirius again without the ability to cheat back at the computer ( which it does a whole bunch of times) ! They really should have put a difficulty level switch in this game.

I believe it has something to do with some version of these fllmod and the savegames you have on your computer.

copy them to another folder and try and launch the game again without any savegames.
