Grinding to a halt - I''m suspicious

I have an AMD XP2000 and an ATI 9700Pro. SO whilst not quite top of the range, I am surprised to see my game shuddering during various fights. Admittedly there is a lot going on, and I do have the graphics set to insane, but c'mon?!

It REALLY grinds to a halt when I have an info screen up in the middle of a fight. The cursor just doesn't move, and then belatedly teleports across the screen.

Are my video settings simply too ambitious or is there something else going on? (I _think_ I have the latest driver).
