Locking up when leaving MP

Every time I try to exit a MP game, my computer locks up, no matter which way I try to leave. Sometimes I can end the "not responding" Freelancer, sometimes I have to pull the power plug out of the wall. I'm running XP home on a high end HP machine, nothing else running.

Any thoughts?

Unplug it from the wall? Do you not have a power button?

Yes, I have a power button, but the computer crashes so badly that the power button doesn't work. It's a "smart" power button, the computer turns itself off when I exit windows. (although it doesn't seem quite so smart when it doesn't work

Well, I started a topic for this exact issue, but someone apparently deleted it.

I had instructions on how to end Freelancer without turning off your computer or putting it to standby or whatever.

But I'm not about to type it all up again.

Hmm XP Home.. I've never used XP Home so I don't think I can really help you here.. Sorry to hear your Power button doesn't work dude.. lol

Here's the general way to do it: (for WInXP)

1.) Press CTRL + ALT + DEL
2.) Press "fr" without the quotes
3.) Press ALT + E
4.) Press Y

Short and sweet: It brings up the task manager, selects freelancer.exe, presses End Process, and confirms it by pressing Yes.

You're doing that all blindly so make sure you follow the steps correctly.

It's still happening to me, and mindleak's solution doesn't always work. I find that if I leave another program open, say, a text file in notepad, that I can sometimes ALT-TAB to it to get the desktop back, then close down the not-responding Freespace. Sigh. Strange that there are only a few people that this is happening to. Oh, well.

edit: Oops, I just looked at posts from longer than 30 days ago, and am seeing other people with this problem too. No solutions that stop it from happening, but maybe Microsoft is working on a fix, since it seems to be happening with some regularity. And we're all letting Microsoft know about the problem, right?
