Skips and stutters during opening movies

Right, here's my problem! The opening movie, as well as the Microsoft and Digital Anvil logo movies, seem to skip and stutter. I only seem to get one stutter during the M$ and DA movies because of their short durations, whereas during the main movie I get lots of skips and sound stutters. This seems rather strange as the rest of the game runs perfectly. Here are my specs :-

Athlon Classic 700@735Mhz
Geforce 3 64Mb 210/480
256Mb Ram @105Mhz
Soundblaster Live!1024

I think it's their vid player coding. Windows media player also stutters on some movies, but when I use a different player not done by M$ (eg. Zoom Player) I get no such problems. Messing around with video codecs installed on your system might fix this, but mweh... with my current setup I can watch dvd rips fine, and besides I can live without seeing the intro anyway.

Btw if I press esc to skip the movies I get a DirectX crash back to windows, so I've had to comment-out the movies in the ini file. I dunno what the deal with this is, either. GeForce2 MX 400, latest nvidia drivers etc. On a side note... if I let the movies play until the end, the game goes to the menu fine no problems. I sat through the movies every time I wanted to play, this happened for 2 weeks (ugh) until I rooted around the ini files and commented them out. Whew.

I'll have to give the newest drivers a go...........

I'm poor.............only got that generic G3 2 weeks ago, and benchmarked with loads of drivers, and been too lazy to try them out with Freelancer........!!

Will have to try this weekend !!

It could be your relatively slow proccessor by today's standards combined with ineffecient movie coding, though other than that I have no idea.

I have the same problem, but have commented out the movies in the ini file.

My specs:
Athlon T-bird 1Ghz
768M SDRAM
GF 4 Ti4200 w/ 64M
SB Live!

I think it is the codec involved.

commenting out the intro movies is a great way of speeding up the game load speed, this is because the pc doesnt load anything else while playing those movies. and it saves me hitting esc at startup

hey cupid.. I have the same cpu but clocked to 770 but a gf4ti4200 and no soundblaster (usin a yamaha xg sound card)- the game runs without a skip at full details 1024 even the movies.. I would'nt buy anything creative made- it's been a joke basically for years now with people who know about sound cards.. somehow they got away with setting this standard way back in the 386-486 days and they've always made nothing but overpriced junk.. look at the system specs of the other guy that posted above- you'll see the piece of hardware you have in common
