Launch Problem

Ok, I launch freelancer....and it opens
i removed the videos from the startup, but even with them, i get the same problem:

after the logo shows for about 10 seconds, freelancer minimizes to my desktop...and the my hard drive (i think it is) starts making a really loud clicking noise, and it does this for a while

then, i have to end the task, wait for it to give me a bug report, or it crashes

it was working fine, until i installed datastorm and mod manager...even with these removed, and a few reinstalls, it doesn't work

specs:
P3 733 mhz
448 ram
radeon 8500LE 128mb
windows 98

anything else, ask...

Have you used the freelancer mod manager program? If so, it will create a bad autosave file, and when you disable the mod to play normally, fl will crash. This happened to me. There is an option in a menu in the mod manager that says "delete autosave- fixes startup crash". Might help if you've used it.

That 'Hard drive clicking' is VERY VERY bad that would mean that it's starting to skip. Your HD could be about ready to bite the dust.

I agree. Sounds like your hard drive has some bad sectors on it. I would suggest running a scandisk ASAP (but backup your data frist, just incase). Most loud clicking is caused by the read/write head actually striking the surface of the hard drive disk platter.

Best of luck!

note on the above solution:
deleting the autosave can help, but in my case i also had to delete all savegames that was saved as the mods were in use.

seems like freelancer checks the integrity in the savegame files on launch
