Random crashes to Desktop

I am having problems with Freelancer crashing to desktop. Windows 2000 Pro comes up with the send an error report dialog, mouse has locked up so have to use keyboard to send or not send and then the system frees up and the mouse works again. The mouse is a USB Logitech.

The crashes seem to happen when I return to space. There seems to always be ships flying infront of my ship and the Game narrator starts giving the mission brief when the game crashes part way through the Brief. The sound continues, narrator and background, after the game has been replaced by the desktop. The error report dialog pops up after the sound finishes.

I have the latest C-Media, onboard sound, drivers available via Windows Update, and I have just rolled back to nVidia 41.09 drivers for my GeForce 256 (64M.

More system details:
CPU: AMD XP 1600+
RAM: 512MB SD-RAM

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi

I have the same problem.
The only thing that I can see that is the same through out the posts is that everyone is running On-Board Sound. My flatmate has no problems and the biggest difference is that he has a stand alone sound card.

Unfortunitely natespizer states he/she has an SB Audigy sound card.

Same crash to desktop problem with a friend's system that I just upgraded for him. No error messages, just instant quit to desktop. Everything is functional, no lock-ups after the crash...just no game either.

P4 2.4B
Gigabyte GA-8SQ800
2x256MB OCZ PC3200 DDR
ATI Radeon 8500LE 128MB w/Catalyst 3.2
40GB Maxtor ATA100
Onboard AC97 sound
350W Power Supply
Win XP Pro SP1
Direct X 9.0a

This wasn't a clean install, but rather a change-and-go upgrade of hardware. I am willing to believe there could be myriad problems with old software, drivers, etc. on the hard drive from the previous config, but since so many are having the same type of crash, I tend to think there is a specific cause associated with this.

Have had an interesting development, of sorts. Just got my hands on the Demo. Installed it and played it for 5 hours straight - no crashes! Have taken every mission that crashes in the Full game without a single problem, other than getting roughed up by the emermy.

So, whatever is causing the crashes does not exist in the Demo.

Well, I seem to have solved my crash problem - to a certain extent at least. The trick seems to have been to reduce the load on my Geforce card. Here's what I did:
- Reduce the hardware acceleration to the minimum FL will run with.
- Reduce the FL graphic details a notch or two
- Reduce to nothing, the Background Stars slider under Detail *** this seems to have made the biggest impact
- Reduce Space Detail to about 50%
- Turn off the Dynamic Comms window
- Turn off Background Dust
- Turn off 3D sound

Now I only seem to crash when I try to go to the Commodity Trader on Manhatten and other similar planets. FL crashes when it tries to start the intro sequence for the Trader. On stations and outside traders on planets, the intro does not cause a crash.

Thus far I've played continuously for quite a few hours without an in-space crash - although I have died a few times :
