Mouse Lag

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Mouse Lag

Hi. Has anyone encountered a mouse lag before? My system is 1.6Ghz with GForce 2 MX 64mb and 512mb Ram with Win98. When I set to 1024x768@32bit, my mouse movement is very laggy, almost out of control. However, when I set to 800x600@32, it response spontaneously.

May I know anybody had such experience? Is someone using a slower PC and yet not encountering this? Could this be my video driver or some setting at Windows? Please advise. Thank you.

I was reading back thru old posts for a fix for this. People have said that running apps in the background can cause it and if you close them that should help especially if you are running Kazaa. If that isn't the case then turning it to 16-bit color should fix it. That's all I could find for a mouse problem using a GeForce card.

I have the same problem with a Geforce 4 Ti4200 @ 320/610, and I've discovered it has something to do with the nVidia pre-render limit ( or the "render no more than x frames" setting in the nVidia control panel if you have coolbits enabled ). Are you mostly seeing the mouse lag when very near to a planet or when entering a nebula? I'd really like to see this problem tracked down, as it makes it impossible for me to play in even 1280x960 without some lag, 1024x768 is fine here though.

I have a P4 2.53 GHz on an ASUS P4S8X with the aforementioned GF4, 512MB of PC2700 DDR RAM and an SB Audigy X-Gamer.

(edit) 16 bit color is far too ugly, I would rather have mouse lag than be forced to go to 16. This still occurs with nothing else running in the background.

Thanks guys for the prompt reply. However, I've tried closing all apps and yet it still occurs. As I've mentioned, it does goes off after I set it to 800x600.
Yup, I do agree the graphics detail has become ugly.
I'm just wondering could it be my PC's capability to handle this resource intensive game? or it's just some mouse driver or video driver that I could just patch to get thru it.

Try updating your drivers, get new official ones from www.nvidia.com, or if you're an experienced user you can try downloading beta drivers from www.guru3d.com/files - but don't kill me if your computer explodes.

This could simply be your GF2 MX, which is quite simply put an ancient video card now, I'm not sure it can handle FL in that high of a resolution. Again, is the mouse lag occuring near the edges of nebulas and/or near planets?

Thank Tasiin. The lag actually occurs within the whole game. Even on menu. Anyway, I'll try patching with the latest driver. Will let you know the result.

What drivers are you running now Icy?

Then I guess you don't have my problem, and unfortunately I think your problem is centered on the fact that you have an MX card, and a GeForce 2 at that. You may have to just face the fact that Freelancer isn't going to run well under 1024x768 with a card that was low-end even when it came out, which was years ago.

I'm running a Radeon 9500 Pro and I have a Pentium II 350MHz (I know, gahetto) and I noticed that whenever I was in a menu the mouse was incredibly choppy. However I just downloaded the newest Catalyst drivers (released Mar. 10th or so) and then installed them, and voilè, no problems. I know you have a Geforce 2 MX, but yeah...

Also, if you do end up having to upgrade, I know a friend who found a GeForce MX 440 for like $75.

I'm not sure he really needs another MX if he plans on doing gaming in 1024x768 or above. If you're that strapped for cash, you can probably pick up a GeForce 3 Ti or standard for roughly $100.

Ouch. Sometimes it happens, installing new drivers always involves a certain amount of risk. Rarely ever get something that severe though, good luck.

Icy: You didn't read what I said then. I said do not install the NEWEST nVidia drivers. Stick with 40.72 or 41.09.
