Not impressed - can''t install Freelancer!

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Not impressed - can''t install Freelancer!

Well it seems I got a dud CD. I can run setup.exe on the CD and it'll get to between 1% and 22% and either crash reboot or advise it can't read either cab1.cab or cab2.cab.

I've tried 3 cd/dvd drives, and even copied the CD to HDD, but to no avail.

Any one else had similar problems?

Pity, it was the last copy EB had. I'll return it and go back to playing Galactic Civilizations.

I had a similar problem. FreeLancer would get to 86% and complain about a cab file. I search ms tech support and came across this article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;245063

Actually, most of it didn't help until the very end when it talks about doing a clean boot. I did the clean boot and finally managed to install FreeLancer. (On the plus side, it seemed to install faster than before without that other stuff loaded .)

EB had a go at the CD as well and it crashed for them. They've sent it back as defective.

Now all I have to do is wait for them to get new stock in.

Ever Noticed that you are supposed to turn off DMA to install the game and then turn it on to run it? Funky.

Freelancer uses Securom for copy protection. Apperently the latest version is working too well. This fix seems to work but requires massive amounts of HD space.

1: Download Nero burning Rom (CD burner not needed) www.ahead-nero.com is the url I believe. Install it.

2: Next Go to http://www.daemon-tools.com/ and Download the app. It is an CD/DVD rom emulator. Install it ensure you have 800 megs free hd space (on top of freelancers install space) before you run it as it will automatically make it's own 800meg swap file.

3:Use Nero to greate an image of the Freelancer (So far you have used 1.4 gigs of HD space) Make sure the box marked "Joliet burn" is check when you make the image. Ignore any read errors, they are the copyprotection being broken After this you should find 2 new files on your HD. Filename.img and filename.cue .cue will be barely 5k while the IMG file will be about 700 megs in size.

4: Run daemon-tools . then rightclick the taskbar icon and under emulation select "securom" Right click again and select "Load image" and direct it to the cue file you made if there is no .cue file just direct to the .img file. Image may also be .ISO, doesn't really matter at all)

The install autorun for freelancer should kick in in about 5 seconds.

5:Install game. Marvel at the fact that the game only took 10 seconds to install.

6: Unload your image and Delete it if you need the drivespace.
Shut Down Daemon.

7: Keep CD in your drive and run the game.

I obviously had the same problem and this was the only way I was able to install the game. Note that I had to break the copy protection of a registered CD to get the game to install.

Something very wrong with the new version of Securom.

A Message to Dev Team members who may read this: DO NOT BUY 3RD PARTY COPY PROTECTION!!! ALL 4 OF THE MAJOR COPY PROTECTION SCHEMES HAVE BEEN CRACKED!!! IT ONLY TAKES AN AVERAGE OF 48 HOURS TO CRACK THEM ONCE THEY ARE UPDATED!!!
Also note the problems people are having installing Freelancer. Want to lose money to bad CD burns because of faulty copy protection?
SAVE YOUR PROFITS AND CREATE YOUR OWN CD PROTECTION SCHEMES.

By doing so you protect your profits and make us gamers much happier, because we know you teams will ensure it works, unlike the theives that sell you "copy protection" for a percentage of your hard earned money. Is it 5 Percent of net sales now? Is it worth it if 30 percent of your games are returned because of faulty copy protection? Think about it.

Nog, thanks for the very useful information. If I have trouble with the replacement CD I'll give it a go.

I also very much agree with your comments regarding 3rd party cd protection.

NP, I have another solution that is guaranteed to work on any machine, but I will only give it out with great reluctance and only if there is great need for it.

Let's just say that I have some serious issues with giving away the alternate method.

3rd party copy protection is a joke at best. A bad joke too.

Nog, afraid the site you referred to, http://www.daemon-tools.com/, has been unavailable for the past few days. Can the app you referred to be sourced from anywhere else?

Odd, I've never known that site to go down before.
And I do not know of any other sites that store it.

This is suprising because the program is freeware.

The full name of the program is Virtual Daemon Manager V3.29.

It should be available on Any P2P network and it's only a 700k download.

Just search any P2P Network for Daemon Tools 3.29

Beware of any results that include a patch or extras, as I have not heard of any such patch or extras being offered.

The best P2P to look in is Overnet Click here Note: Broadband only. A modem user cannot run Overnet effectively.

Damn, I've been looking around the various gaming and Freelancer forums and this problem is too large to ignore.

Anyone having problems installing Freelancer:
[email protected]

Download Overnet at least, Set it up to work with your filewall and then Email me at the above address. I will then direct you to an installable copy of Freelancer. I will only do this for a few days.

Put something Like "My Freelancer is broke" in the subject line. Just make it obvious.

Expect the reply in the Evening.

http://daemon-tools.com/ works just fine for me.

It's rarely the developers' choice Nog, look at UT2003, the first version of that game was plagued by SecuRom issues and the developers even posted about being powerless to change it.

Post Fri Apr 04, 2003 12:22 am

Tried the site again and all is well. Managed to download apps without incident. When I get my new CD I'll see if I need to use them.

I have to say that I have never had problems with UT2003 and installing. Video card issues are another matter :\.

Thanks for the help folks, I'll post an update of my next play with trying to install Freelancer when I get to it.

I just remembered that I have not deleted the copy of the CD I made to try and install from HDD. I have made an ISO image and used the DeamonTools program and I'm pleased to advise that I have now installed Freelancer, not that I can play it until I get a new copy of a real CD and associated serial number, should the game require one. And no, that isn't a veiled request for one, I've waited this long, a couple more days won't hurt.

Thanks for all the help Nog, and everyone else.

Taslin: I have worked as a developer before, But have no affiliation with With Microsoft or Digital Anvil. In both cases we have mutual friends though.

I Guess now I say who I am to those who may know me. Hopefully know one really cares

Before an Illness Took me out of the loop last year,
I was known on the net as Abomonog.

My last job was as a writer for Gamespy Industries on The Planetquake website.

But Before then I helped on the Developement of the Painkeep Arena mod for Team Evolve and I was one of the Beta Tester on Sierra's Starsiege/TribesSeries.

I didn't want to post the guaranteed fix because, even though I know for a fact the the fix would work, it would also open the game up to piracy. What made me decide to at least make the fix available to the truly desperate was something that a tech guy at Interplay told me once. "It's far better to lose money from a thief than to lose money to dissatisfied customers." Said basically while handing me a cracked copy of Carmageddon 2 because the CD check in the store bought version didn't work with my CDrom. So now I go from BBS to BBS doing tech support service on games that I have and hopefully making friends in the prossess.

The problem with copy protection is that in the only time it was really working was when the Commodore 64 was the only real major PC out there. Back then you did your own protection and if anyone wanted to break it, they had to start fresh with each game. Today, there are only 4 different types of copy protection out there so all one has to do now is download a simple application that will defeat it. As Wydom@ker just learned, Basic everyday cdrom burning programs are now being designed to defeat copy protection. Why? Because it's real easy to do. Music CD protection is totally useless, If you can't rip it, just use your wav editor to record the playback. Yet they still try.

But the idea of this thread was to fix the install problem and indeed, I have found another solution. For some (but not all) of you trying to install but getting errors the following may just work.

Try this: Instead of installing the cd from the Autorun Menu. Instead, shut down the Autorun menu and run the setup.exe on the root of the CDdrive. Or just open the run dialog and type d:/setup.exe (where d is the letter of your CD drive).

Wydom@ker: If you still have the origonal CD, just put it in your CD drive and run the game, it should work. Key numbers are randomly generated with certain factors like hardware present and Windows version being influencers. I'm sure there is also a strict format because one cannot dictate their own numbers (I've already tried this). you may also try to load up your image in daemon with the CD protection set to Safedisk emulation. It's not 100% but it may just fool the Freelancer CD check when you try and run the game.

This means that everytime you install the game, the serial number is different, even if nothing else has changed.
I know of more than one unlucky player that has learned that the hard way.

If anyone has actually emailed me, I haven't check yet, but you 'll get the reply tonight.
