Uber Lag

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Uber Lag

It is impossible for me to play MP AT ALL! Ships teleport all over the place! I get killed by nothings from 99+k! I'm on a 56k, but it shouldn't be this bad. It's the same no matter what the ping is. Even at a ping of 205, the game is utterly unplayable. With 56k, lag is to be expected, but... THIS much!? This happens in battles and outside battles. I've waited up to a minute at the trade lane for my ship to dock online. It lags when nothing is around sometimes. It lags with one ship within 2.5k from my position. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

I don't know dude, my ISP is undergoing a crappy phase, and I find server pings around 60 on my supposedly ADSL line are enough to throw most of my aim off (I'm one of those twitch combat pilots). If you know anyone using the same ISP you could ask them -- it was helpful for me to compare performance with other gamers using the same ISP.

It's sad, but the only way I can get the net right now is 56k and I have to dial up to Oklahoma City when I'm closer to Dallas. It's the cheapest way to go around here. They keep promising that we'll have wireless net, but they've been promising that for a year. The cable company has no plans of bringing cable net to my town. DSL isn't available here. Of course, I'll experience lag. I've never had lag like this, though. The only way I can play MP is to host my own server, but, being on 56k, I'm the only one that could play on it. Not much of MP. I love the game, but I need MP.

Wireless net is EXPENSIVE! Around here (Indianapolis area) I can get 128 up and 128 down solid for $100/month or get cable 3mbit down/128 up pretty stable for $35/month. Sucks that you can't get cable or DSL. Maybe the netcode in this game just really sucks that bad.

Wireless net that is being offered here is only gonna be $30 a month plus the $20 a month for so long for the installation. Total, that's cheaper than the $50 - $60 we are paying for crappy 56k now. It's sad. We have to pay for 56k, plus the phone service for unlimited calling to a long-distance number that's over three hours worth of a drive from here. They're going to be changing that unlimited plan to 2,000 minutes per month. Come this fall, I may not have the net. They've been promising wireless net availability for over a year now. The people here just suck.

Wireless Net? Does this involve satellites? Find out, as if it does you may as well stick to the modems for gaming.

For those about to ask:

Because it takes 250ms for a signal to get to a geosynchronous sattelite and back to earth. Add that value to any ping time you may think you have.
Bandwidth of the connection does not matter with sattelites. the ping will always be at least 250 and probably closer to 350 (= unplayable ping)

Wireless net does NOT involve satilites. Wireless net is taking an antenna and connecting to a wireless access point else where. It's kinda like wireless LAN except longer distances. But you get solid speed and his ping times should be half of what they are now.

For one, my 56k is uber Hell even for 56k. *lol* I get d/ced constantly. My ISP is SBC Yahoo! Dial. It's utter evil. Second, he's right. There is not satellite involved. They will set up a small dish that will send and recieve signals to a device I connect to my PC. I tested it out over a year ago when they first promised and swore it'd be here within three months. *lol* My first impression, after trying it out, was that I had found the Promised Land. :p I was practically drooling all over the place. *lol* Anyway, they say they're just waiting for a part now. Before, the town council wouldn't let them use their land because they thought they would recieve over $2,000 a month for letting them set it up. I have no idea where they got that idea. This is a tiny town. They'd be losing money if they paid that. Anyway... I'm hoping they get it set up very soon. At the very least, I hope the new patch fixes the net code. Not even my 56k should lag THAT bad...
