It seems like many people are having this problem. I had tried to make a custom ship by editing the ini's but couldn't get it to work, so I gave up and put the original ini's back in. But then the game crashed to desktop at the "Freelancer" screen after the 3 intro movies. The problem was that I had changed the ini's earlier and played the game, so the savegames were causing the crash. What you have to do is get rid of all the savegames in My Documents\My Games\Freelancer\Accts that were from after the ini's were changed. I used trial and error to find the savegame that was the last one before I changed the ini's, and now the game runs fine. Good luck out there!
