Another way to sound problem / Mission 3 stuck with 3 Rheinl

I've read a lot of posts here and on other forums and compiled all usefull info filtering out unnecessary or wrong steps.
I have Windows XP SP1 with professional Fraunhofer coedc installed but it should work for other flavours of Windows also.
In my opinion the reason is in replacing either Fraunhofer codec itself with different version or installing profesiional codec on top of standard one.
After some tries and efforts I found how to solve it.

First of all I run wmfdist.exe from the original CD \REDIST folder.
This file is Windows-media format run-time V 7.1 and it includes file l3coedca.acm
For those who deleted all *.acm files from their folders it should restore original codecs for the game.

If you use professional codecs, it will install l3codecp.acm also.

Next step is to correct registry settings to use correct codec for media player.
Open regedit and find registry key
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\msacm.l3acm
My value was set to "l3codecp.acm". Change it to "l3codeca.acm".
Even if you uninstall or delete professional codec it still stays on that value. I had same problems with choppy sound with Pro codec installed and I was stuck in mission 3.
After removing pro codec I lost sound. After changing registry I got sound back and installed Pro codec again, correcting the above mentioned value after installation.
The sound is back without even rebooting. And I was able to continue with Mission 3.
If you deleted al *.acm files as some people recommended here simply reinstall Widnows Media player which should reinstall the most significant back and follow my procedure to correct the registry.

Good luck in space!
