Game crashes continuously

Please help!

After eventually getting the game to install (problems with Direct X 9.0 installation) I now have some problem with the game. I can run the game and see the intro videos, but I have a problem when I select a new single player game. I get about 20 seconds (sometimes shorter) into the single player intro video and the game crashes back to windows...no error messages. I have checked the Microsoft website and followed their recommendations with no luck. I have installed the latest drivers for my sound and video... with no luck.

I also tried multiplayer on the net....got to the first city, but then crashed again before I could do anything.

System details....

Athlon 1.2GHz
GeForce II Ti (Detonator 41.09 drivers)
IWill KK266plus Mobo
Onboard sound
DirectX 9.0

Has anyone had a similar problem or know of a fix? Very frustrating this

Cheers

i was having the same problem. what fixed it for me was i got the new bios for my motherboard (kt7a raid) and it fixed it.

Thanks for that.

I have flashed the new BIOS, but unfortunately that didn't work!

This is getting very upsetting as I have heard how good this game is. D'oh!

Anyone else have any ideas? Please?

I had the same problem too, although I never had problems with the trial version. After installing the game Norton Disk Doctor showed lost sectors and invalid entries in the FL installation dir. Fixing them didn't help, afterwards I could get past the intro, but the game still crashed nearly every time I talked to NPCs in a bar. After uninstalling the game I defragmented my harddisk and let Disk Doctor check for errors and fix them, then I installed the game again and now it runs fine for about 25 hrs game time.

Though, there are 2 things I noticed: First, on my computer NDD finds invalid entries in the Freelancer dir every time I install the game (either trial or full version), but fixim them is easy and permanent (while the lost sectors reappeared in the crashing FL-installation after restarting the game). Second, in the crashing installation, the .ini where FL stores user options (somewhere in My Documents/My Games/Freelancer, don't remember the name right now) showed me a screen resolution of 1024x768 at 24bpp, while the trial version as well as the working full version run at 32bpp.

OK....I have uninstalled FL. Defragmented my hard drive and reinstalled FL. No luck.....still get the same problem with the game crashing to desktop.

Strangely the game works on my other (dated) machine. Specs on that one....

Celeron 566 @ 850MHz
AOpen AX6BCPro Mobo
TNT2 Ultra video
Hercules Gamesurround Muse XL sound
128MB RAM
WIN 98SE

Very strange. Looks like a complete format and reinstall WIN XP is in order.

Not sure. Is it a factor?

*Edit*

I have now installed Media Player 9. No change

Try running at 800x600 resolution

I had very similar problems....what fixed some of them was turning cut scene detail all the way down (dont ask me why!) ...The remaining crash places got so bad that i ended up returning my copy for a new one and it worked! Im not sayin you should exchange your copy now, but that happened to work for me.

I have the game runing at 800*640@16bit with detail as low as it will go, 3D sound is off and still it crashes

I thought it may have been a sound conflict, so I followed all the instructions in the readme and the sound post here, but no change.

I had thought about returning and exchanging my copy of the game...might do it now.

Thanks for all your help,

Cheers

Well, I finally figured it out!!

I sorted through everything (drivers, bios, firmware, etc) that I had upgraded, and I found that I had not updated my Motherboard 4in1 drivers. D'oh!

Downloaded and installed..........and the game runs fine. YEAH!!
