Freelancer crashes to the desktop after the Freelancer screen when i start it up.

GG ti200 w/ 41.09 drivers.
512 MB ram.

dx9

game originally ran fine. My son installed a mod, causing his profile to CTD after freelancer splash screen. Admin profile could still run game. The next day, Admin would CTD also. I've uninstalled, reinstalled to another hard drive, making sure no files remained from previous install. I've also reinstalled dx9. Still get the CTD.
I've already done the preaching about the damn mod, so I can do without that.
Any suggestions?
