Problem with MP connection Please Help

My friend is running a server (password protected) on his 2nd computer. Its a XP pro box behind a linsys router on Road Runner Cable Connection. he connects to it via lan while me and my other friends connect via internet.

Every once in a while we get disconnected not all at the same time but in random intervals. sometimes its just me on the server and I get disconnected. The part thats really not fun is it can take 5, 10 or 15 minutes to get back in. I can always see the server on the list and it asks for the password but it will time out and not connect. While I cant am out my other friends are in playing...

Does anyone have any idea why this would be occouring? Does it happen to anyone else??

Does his server have the current OS patches? He could also try reinstalling DX 9.
