Linksys Router Setup

I'm using a Linksys BEFSR41 Etherfast Cable/DSL router. I've tried as many OS/Hardware fixes as I can to get around the crash on MP issue. I've read all the stuff about which ports to have open etc, what I'm wondering is if some of the port settings I have for other games is interfering.

If anyone who can play MP is using a Linksys router could you post your settings so i could try them?

I'm getting desperate here.

Thanks

Dude, 99 out of 100 -> it is NOT your router!

Actually it is your router, I spent hours on the phone with MS Tech Support before I finally worked out the issue.

Turn on Port Triggering (under the Port Forwarding options). Set it up to forward ports 2300-2400 outside to 2300-2400 inside. It will make some rules that will cause FL to start working. At least that's what finally fixed it for me. And I worked on a solution for a week.

Good Luck,
Feel free to e-mail me if you want an exact setup.

I didnt have to change anything on my Linksys for it to work client side. Shouldn't have to forward any ports at all.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that setup but it's going to knock out my Mechwarrior IV server I think.

I'll post after I get home from work and try it.

one of the main reasons I think it's my Router is I installed it on my Win2k machine I run my Mechwarrior IV server on and have the exact same problem I have on my main XP Home machine.

I bet that this is an issue with 1st generation LinkSys Routers only.

Mine is a 1st Gen. Also running older firmware, 1.42.3

From the client side, you shouldn't have to change a thing on that Linksys. I run the same router/gateway and there were no specific tweaks for Fl multiplayer.

I am running a server however, and for that, I had to forward UDP ports 2300-2400 to the server's IP *AND* open up the DirectPlay ports as well.

Other than the piece of %&%&^ server crashing every friggin' hour, it works fine.

You might try upgrading the firmware on your BEFSR41 as well. Easy to do and takes less than 5 mins.

I have a 1st gen LinkSys BEFSR41 and all last night everytime I tried multi-play either LAN or INTERNET I crashed out to the desktop. I re-installed freelancer, directX, and video drivers, still no dice.
Today I upgraded the version of the firmware on the router to v1.442 from 1.44. That seems to have done it as I can now play MP games both LAN and INTERNET. Owners of BEFSR41 having this problem upgrade your firmware, I suspect it will fix your problem! Here is where LinkSys keeps the file:

Wow thanks for the responses, I'll be upgrading my firmware, assuming I can get home from work.

It's snowing pretty heavy out here in Denver, CO right now.
