Do servers have a difficulty level?

I have noticed that combat seems harder on some servers than others, but I'm not certain if I'm just slowly losing my mind. On some servers, the dogfights are pretty easy. But then I'll go on others and ships will be zig zaggin all over the place, drastic fast course adjustments, etc. But I wasn't sure if it was some kind of lag artifact. Many servers I have tried to play on, I see that flashing yellow "connect" icon on the screen alot during battles.

Sounds like you are lagging.

Ok thanks, I'll just have to keep trying servers till I find one I can get a stable connect on.

Yes, definitely lagging. I used to think it was some high tech Xeno or Nomad ship that could stop on a time and zoom off in the opposite direction, but after seeing all the ships in SP, you realize no ship can outperform the Lag Class Starfighter (LCSF).

After you play the game in MP enough, you can start to instantly recognize the LCSF from over 2km distance. You'll also find that depending on your weapons, it'll take you say 30 seconds on average to toast a bad guy in SP or lag-free MP.. but a LCSF will take 90 seconds or more.

When all the ships in the game are LCSFs, that's when I log out and find a new server to play on.

Sort the servers by Ping and use the lowest one. Hopefully it's consistant for you.

No, no, ping has nothing to do with it, neither does my hardware. I'm running the game on a full 1400+kbs up/down T1 on a P4 2.2ghz, GeForce4 TI4600 w/1 gig of memory. Just about everything else runs super smooth on this setup.

In the server list, most pings hover at a darling 20 or 30ms. However, by the time I connect and get into a battle so I can check the lag, it's terrible. It's already been concluded that line speed or client hardware is not the major contributor to FL lag, it's the hardware specs of the server (which apparently need to be very high).

When ASE comes up with FL support, my first custom filter will be to get rid of every game that has over 28 players in it. FL just can't seem to handle that, unless they're running some major server hardware (which most aren't). I know that's a broad statement but I have yet to be proven wrong.

Even my lovable favorite Elite is experiencing some lag slowdowns.. on those few times I can find an open slot to get into to play, that is.

The same problem happened during the first weeks of BF:1942. Everyone decided Bigger was Better, and started to run a 64 player server, thinking their DSL modem and P4 1.8ghz could handle it. BF:1942 unfortunately required both a huge pipe AND steep server requirements to get decent frame rates. When ASE filters out CPU speed < 1500, my game play experience was tons better... hopefully I can use the same filters for FL.

BTW, ASE = All Seeing Eye, a matchmaking service similiar (but vastly superior) to GameSpy Arcade/3D and most ingame browsers. Search for it on Google..

I've played one with 40 and a good ping (gamesurf.de), but at 41 the ping jumped to like 2000 and it turned unplayable
