can not connect to ANY servers

Ok, I seem to have a problem on one else is having.

I seem to timeout connecting to any server, even my own lan server.

I do have my computer behind a firewall router, but do have the udp ports 2302-2304 open on it.

I have 2 computers, neither connects. But here's something very strange. My computer has 2 different installs of XP Pro, and one has all the updates and such, the other is basically clean. The 1st is the OS I use regularly, the 2nd is for testing issues like this one.

With the 2nd, I connected no problems. But not the 1st, nor on my wife's computer with win2k. Does anyone have any ideas what's up? I can't make any sense of this, it's like I'm not getting out, but here I am posting here, so somehow this OS install doesn't seem to let the connection thru.

Anything anyone can think of I can try? This is crazy, and I don't want to have to change OS's just to play MP.

Did you install DirectX 9? I heard Freelancer uses a DirectPlay component of DX9. Maybe that's why you can't connect.

well yeah. don't think the SP would have played so well without it

basically, between the 2 OS installs, the main one has patches and all the software I use and don't use installed thru it. The backup install I only installed the basics like trillian and the audigy2 drivers, no anti virus, no demos, that kind of thing. Very few patches, and no SP1 from MS.
