24/7 Gigabit Freelancer Server!

Greetings all

I have just set up a dedicated server for Freelancer.

Connection: We are connected to the internet via five redundant national ISPs with link speeds ranging from DS-1 to Gigabit/SONET. The machine is connected to our internal network via Gigabit-over-copper.

Server name: Gigabit Freelancer -- Western PA
Hostname: freelancer.phys.cmu.edu
IP: 128.2.27.92
Max Players: 128
Player Harm: Off (reply to this if you think it's lame/not lame and the majority will rule)

Enjoy

awsome, can you give us greater detail of the settings?
how reliable do you think it will be?

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 12:41 am

me again, when the new patch comes out do you think when you upgrade the server peoples progress in your server will be lost?

I will not say anything is "lame" or not.
But, I can say this...

I saw your server before reading this post, just a few minutes ago in fact.
I ALMOST logged in, since I live in Central PA, Williamsport to be exact.
But...

A) I don't play ANY games online that restrict PvP...I like it as "real" as possible in any "fantasy" type of setting, and saying you can kill everybody except other "real" people just doesn't cut it for me.

AI is dumb. Live minds are usually a greater challenge.

C) If I want to only compete against "robots" (AI) I can get all I want of it from the single player version of whichever game is in question.

D) DANGER! There is NOTHING like the thrill of seeing another real, live, player for the first time and having the adrenaline rush of not knowing if they are going to be kind or krazy! hehe AI just NEVER seems to have that kind of unpredictability no matter how well the designers write it.

So, "Player Harm: Off" lame?
I don't know.
For me?
No.

Good luck with the server though.
And, if you do decide to "flick that switch" I will see you there!

Fly well,

player damage off = lame

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 3:51 am

Okay, this is the sentiment I seem to be getting globally, so next time I see zero people online I'll restart it and it will be PvP enabled.

The two reasons I left it off to begin with... One, it was the default setting so I figured it was popular. I know, stupid. Two, I know it only takes one asshole to join up on a mission with a player and halfway through just start randomly blasting them, and just making everyone's experience a negative one. But I guess you could just avoid that person, or gang up on him, or what have you.

I think I'm also gonna throw two newer processors in that box, I figured since the FLServer was multithreaded I could get away with two older processors instead of one newer one, but it's chugging away at both processors... so an upgrade is soon in order.

Therefore, if it goes down sometime next week, I am putting newer processors in it.

Thanks for all the input!

getting blown to hell by 3 defenders of your faction with cruise disruptors the second you launch from manhatten and the cops not doing anything is also pretty lame. does encourage some nice teamwork though (on their part)

RearAdmiralPants,

What CPUs do you have in it right now, and what are you going up to...if I may ask?

I plan to use a Dual P4 1.3Ghz system on a Dual T1 pipe for a server, IF DA/M$ fix all the exploits the MP game has right now.
Just wondered how it might comapre to yours and plan ahead a bit.

Fly well,

Something wrong with your server?

Couldn't connect, even though it was listed as running.
So, I traced it...

The server crashed.

I wish there was someway it could detect the crash and autoreboot.

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 10:48 am

I think server admin could use a deamon tool to restart a crashed or hung server.
It works for NWN server, might work for FL as well.

Being an outcast its quite lame to shoot at those players with "navy" signs without any effect.

Server's back up... Yeah the binary seemed to crash. It's the weekend though and that keeps me pretty engaged at bars and my bed, so I'll be in on Monday to see if I can't whip something up to autorestart the server if/when it crashes again.

Dredd, a dual P4 1.3ghz should be fine. I was surprised to see that it's multithreaded. I don't know what I'm gonna drop in that machine yet, it depends what floats around at work. But I'll keep everyone posted when I do.

Oh, and I enabled player harm.

Enjoy
