Connect MANUALLY! (Don''t bother with "Global Login&quo

Greetings All,

I knew this would happen.
A game is released, the "Global Server" is stressed to capacity, and *POW* the server goes down and everybody starts crying "foul".

Yes, I knew it would happen.
Which is why I never use the "Global Server" to log into my favourite servers anyway.
I connect MANUALLY.

From the "readme":

Manually Connecting to Freelancer Servers
Freelancer.exe supports a command line parameter for manually adding servers to the list of potential servers. This advanced feature requires that you know the hostname or IP address of the server computer as well as the network port on which FLServer is running. It is useful for playing on servers that are not on your LAN and are not advertised on the global server.

To add a server to the server list, use the following syntax:
FREELANCER.EXE -s<hostname>:<port>
where hostname is the name or IP address of the server computer and port is the network port number on which the server is running. You may add multiple servers by repeating the same syntax. See the ReadmeServer.htm file in the Extras directory on the Freelancer CD for information on manually setting the network port on the server.

Servers added in this way will not appear in the list of available servers until the respond to a ping request from your computer.

Examples:
FREELANCER.EXE -sCoolServer.myisp.com:2302

This will add the computer CoolServer.myisp.com to the list of potential servers; it will be pinged on port 2302.

FREELANCER.EXE -sA_Sever.myisp.com:2302 -sAnother_Server.yourisp.com:2304

This will add the computers A_Server.myisp.com and Another_Server.yourisp.com to the list of potential servers. A_Server.myisp.com will be pinged on port 2302 and Another_Server.yourisp.com will be pinged on port 2304.

For additional help and instructions on running and maintaining a Freelancer Server, please see the Multiplayer Troubleshooting and Corrections and Additions sections in this document, as well as the ReadmeServer.htm file in the Extras directory on the Freelancer CD.

Anyone with common sense should have been writing down their favourite server names, and IP Addresses...you think the IP was listed just for fun?

Use the IP Address as the "hostname", as mentioned above, and "2302" as port number, since most people will not manually choose a specific port and 2302 is the default.

That way you only have to use the "Global Server" to actually see the server for the first time.
After you get a favourite server selected you just select "LAN " game, NOT "Internet", and all your "favourites" you add manually will pop up INSTANTLY(It doesn't take all that time sorting through the full list of servers, just pings the ones you list to see if they are online. ) and you can play even when the "Global Server" is down.

I hope this has helped at least one person.

In fact, I setup my server as NON-advertised on the net and password protected to keep unwanted players out...

I had to give the -s connection info to those I wanted to play with.. and it's been working great!

how do i find a list of the servers i have accessed. Freelancer has to save it somewhere. I want to get on a server and it's not listed on the global server and I was really getting somewhere with my player.

Please help. If anyone knows if there is a file somewhere with the list of visited servers with their IP addresses let me know. thanks

I dont think it saves the direct IP's you use. I tried to join a game then exit out and searched for that IP I used and it came up blank. It seems to only add it at the time you use the -s switch and then it's gone when you exit.

I'm seriously considering making a FL address book with names/ip's and you can just click on them to launch. Another thing you can do is make a .bat file that adds them everytime you launch.

I will clarify a little bit...

1. You right-click the icon on your Desktop/QuickLaunch Bar that you use to start the game.

2. You select "Properties".

3. You add the "-sIP:port" behind the quotation marks of "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\exe" in the TARGET window.
So that it would look like this if you use the default install folder:
<pre><font size=1 face=Courier>
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\Freelancer.exe" -s128.186.141.13:2302
</font></pre>
Or, like this with multiple servers added:
<pre><font size=1 face=Courier>
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\Freelancer.exe" -s128.186.141.13:2302 -s24.123.200.210:2302 -s128.2.27.92:2302 -s64.21.34.194:2302 -s199.199.151.14:2302
</font></pre>

4. You click APPLY.

5. You start the game using that ICON.

6. You click MULTIPLAYER.

7. You click through the ratings warning.

8. You click LAN.

9. You see ALL those servers you added pop up as they are pinged.

10. You double-click the server you want to play.

11. You double-click the character you want to play.

12. You PLAY.

Hope this helps a bit.

Fly well,

PD

You dont have to clarify, I understood what you said. The previous poster asked if the game stored the last IP he connected to, and it doesnt. It's a manual change.

I'll end up making a front end address book with server names and ports or a .bat file that I can just add new IP's too.

Ah okay, I thought you were trying to use the "fldirectip.hta" to connect and saying that IT didn't store the IPs, which it doesn't but SHOULD, which seems to make it kinda useless unless you like to type in IP adresses everytime you play. hehe

Good luck with your tool.
If you post it I will have to give it a try...I LOVE TOYS!
