To the ones that have access to FL MP...

If you are one of the people that just obtained a demo, feel free to log into the Elite server and take it for a spin. We'd LOVE to see what the server can handle. To make this a concerted effort, let's try to set a time for everyone to attempt to log on at the same time and take it for a spin. The time of this post is approximately 2:00 PM EST 02/14/03. Let's all try to meet up on Elite tomorrow 02/15/03 at high noon EST. If you can't make it at high noon because of a time zone issue, then try to log in when you can.

We'll monitor the server and if it breaks, that's good feedback folks. As long as an admin is available and it does crash/break, we'll be able to restart it quickly. I'm going to be available all day long to monitor it so this might be a good dry run for the server. If we have some success doing this, we'll continue to test it more and more in the coming weeks. This would go a long way to making the server stable when most everyone get's the game in March.

If there are any problems with the server and a server admin isn't available right away, give it 5-10 minutes then feel free to post in this thread as a backup and someone will see the message. Be sure you have a full cup of patience, we really don't know the capabilites of this server yet. If there are an overwhelming amount of problems, there are other servers you can log into. Thanks in advance everyone!

I'll be there....what's the theoretical limit for the ELITE server again?

Post Fri Feb 14, 2003 11:38 pm

I'll be there, only problem is that right now I can see the Elite server but the ping says no response. I turned off the winxp firewall. I have pings with most servers but a few others say no response. If I try to connect it says that either the server was being shut down when I tried to access it or there are internet problems.

Probably something I'm not doing right on my end. Any ideas on a fix? I'm on cable modem, my connection is split for the home network through a router. Don't know if that is causing the problem or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll definitely try for noon tomorrow though.

I'm having trouble getting in to that server too. I can access all other servers, just not Elite. I get the "No responce" message up. I was just playing on TLR server but it was empty, so I can play online.
Is there something that could block you from one server but not another? I can't think of anything.

HELP!!! I'd like to be there for that server test tomorrow!

@OMEGA (et. all)

One thing that always seems to be an issue with computers and modems and routers. They work better when you shut them down and restart them. I do that myself on occassion to "clean" up the line. Broadband users tend to not reboot very often either (I'm living proof of this, been connected for 4 days plus now). My suggestion (albeit it a generic one) is to start with a fresh boot. Be sure you unplug any power and phone lines from a DSL modem. Same with Cable, turn the router off for a few seconds. Then plug evrything back in and see if it makes a difference.

It could just be heavy internet traffic as well.

Well, I found out the source of my problem is with the router. I just don't know how to fix the blasted thing, or what settings to change. I know ziltch about routers. I tried what you suggested Stinger, clean boot and all. Still didnt work so then I unplugged my network cable from the router and plugged straight into the cable modem and that got it.

The router is a D-Link DI-704P. It has some weird browser setup screen, no actually buttons or switches on the device. I tried updating the firmware but I keep getting errors. Any suggestions?

@Sting: I guess it is the same problem I see - and I don't have access to update the firmware... Dang!

An large amount of help on networking is available here. If you can not find the answers by "searching" then by all means, post your issue on the board and someone will surely answer it. I cut my computer knowledge teeth on this site.

I am sure if the answers to networking issues aren't found there, try here !

Both of these websites are just full of helpful hints. Been going to those sites for help for many many years.

Stinger, are there any ports that need to be opened from the client side? I've played with all my router settings that I thought would help. I checked out those links...couldn't locate a solution. I've even switched my IP to a DMZ, which should open it to everything, still no dice.

Freelancer uses the standard DirectPlay8 ports 2300–2400. Ports are allocated starting at 2300, working toward 2400.

This port range is used by both the game client and game server. The game server uses it to connect to the list server and to accept incoming connections from game clients. The game client uses it to connect to both the list server and the game servers.

Hey Stinger,

Can you post the results of the test? I'll send you an e-mail as well.
