This has been posted before in much greater detail.

flserver, the program that IS the FL server needs only one INCOMING port. That means most firewalls must be configured to open and redirect anything coming in on that port to your server. Sure it uses about 10 more OUTGOING ports but that's no problem and not needed to know unless you have an OUTGOING firewall as well like ZoneAlarm.

The Readme.rtf file that installs in all installations (FL all and FL server installs) is in the Freelancer directory and lists information for running a server. It says you should open INCOMING ports in a range (ports 2303-2304). So unless you use the /P switch, flserver may use any ONE of the ports in the range above. I suggest you use the /P switch and open only ONE port in your gateway versus opening a range where some ports are open but not used.

There is the arguement that all of these ports are being directed in the server to DirectPlay (part of DirectX) and thus DirectPlay will deal with anything untoward that comes in on the other ports. I say why take the chance? Open only what you need and no more.

As for the mod prevalent mod out there I suggest you look through the FL global server list. Usually they mention the mod in the server name. Otherwise look at the version numbers as different groups of numbers indicate different mods.
