Global server connection issues.

Hello.

Does it take a lot of time to connect to the "Global server" of FL? I waited for almost 15 minutes and nothing came up! I'm talking about Multiplayer online not on LAN. Anyone has any idea's? thank you in advance.

Nope, that didn't solve it, I followed the instructions and nothing happened, I still can't see anything on the Multiplayer window for Online servers. I don't if Norton internet security has anything to do with this. Someone posted the same issue and they ended up talking about ZoneAlarm firewall instead of talking about the problem. *sigh* I'm not that in a hurry, I mean hey, I just got my hands on my eagle and it's almost fully loaded, I'm going through systems checking each and ever wreck!

But still, afterwards, there won't be a lot to do, the rest will be obvious, it's either blowing ships and stations up, or making more money by trading. So the alternative will be MP. Anyways, I'm looking forward for any idea's. thanks in advance.

Majority of FL global list server connection issues are due to DirectX being fubar. So we'll assume that's fine.

Do you have ZoneAlarm? ZA is kind of unique because it's a firewall for both INCOMING and OUTGOING traffic. Most firewalls are incoming traffic cops only. Since the FL client (what you're running) does outgoing traffic (much like when you're browsing) ZA could really mess with FL MP. It did for me until I dumped ZA and got a hardware firewall.

It's also possible your ISP is blocking something. It wasn't unheard of when people were playing at college or at work, network administrators would block ports haing indications of heavy traffic on specific ports thinking they were P2P or such. Even WinXP's SP2 firewall could block ports but they'd be all INCOMING ports since that firewall is incoming only. Just a few more ideas.

hey Earendil, your right about ZA being a goro when it comes to firewall softwear, but no, I don't have it, I've tried and it gave me LOADS of issues, so I removed it. I do have norton internet security. But you know, you wouldn't really think about your firewall unless you're having the same problem with ALL MP gaming. Halo 1 works fine and I had no problems running MP for it. so you kinda not think about the firewall (regarding what it is).

as for my ISP, well, I guess its for their best interest to let me send massive data through all ports so that they make money from me I'm on a basic dsl plan in which my bandwidth is limited. (2 gigs to be more spesific, upload + download). As for my system, the OS is winXP pro, on a service pack 1, I never liked SP2 for the huge amount of issues it gave me. Again I'd say, you know, if it was my system nothing would've probably worked, but everything else worked fine so that leaves me wondering.

(puts on sherlock holmes hat)

Your not using SP2 by choice, so I'm wondering if it's a DirectX issue.
You might want to upgrade to the latest greatest drivers on all items.
Could be some settings within your firewall that is unique to Freelancer.
Do you have any PhP software running that might be conflicting with ports?

Generally speaking, it's in your best interest to be updated on the latest verison of software/patches/drivers (not beta's) etc. and if they seem to be causing you problems, it's something else besides those that are causing the problems. I have heard all the stories and reasons why people refuse to stay up-to-date on these things but they really do not hold any water. A properly configured and maintained computer should not be something you have to fight.

I'm not trying be be arrogant, just realistic and there's years of experience in these words. Take 'em or leave 'em.
