Can I run a server?

Just one question, can I run a FL server using the setup I got now? Any tutorials on how to make the server work well would also be helpful.

P4 3.0 Ghz
1 Gb Corsair RAM
160 Gb HDD
X700 Pro 256 Mb
Broadband Connection (2 Mbps)

I am hoping to run a 24/7 Freelancer Fifth Gear server when I finish it.

You can if you don't Play on the same pc as the server, that will just lag it too much. Related to that Only have the basics running when the server is up:

Firewall
FLserver
IFSO/FLAC

So kill all the windows junk if using XP, as pretty windows and animated/scrolling windows make for a bad server // No virus scanner on the server pc, so either make a 3.5 floppy for checking the pc or remotely scan it via your lan from another pc.

As for your connection its the upload thats important 2mbit is good but not if your upload is 128k

well it will play the game and sever NP. and you could play on it if there are not to many people on it. but as for you conecceton you up stream is 2 mbps but what about your down stream. sometimes the sever will take more down then up. most times its 128kbps or less contact your isp to find out. if you plan to play on the sever don have any more then 20 people and thats pushing it. if you computer has a HT P4 then you sould be fine.

later

p.s dont look behind u

Yah, my pc is a HT P4. I'm not sure what my upstream is, but do you think that the player limit should be 32 or 16? I was hoping on using the pc for every day use as well as a server.

If you have UK ADSL then your upload will be 256k or if using Cable then could be 400k, so at best you can host 20 to 24 players.

As for using the pc and running a server, it won't happen as FLserver and any admin utilities need all the ram and cpu power you have and that is for a standard server not modded. Mods add extra Server load and so the player limit has to drop.

So unless you have another pc to host the server I wouldn't recommend you USE the pc that is the FL server.

Ok, so I guess I will just use the server for my clan. Will an 8 player server be small enoguh to play games on the run server at the same time.

Also, why does a mod increase the load?

Post Wed Jan 12, 2005 4:08 pm

The standard game requires a Good pc to run well but Mods add systems/ships/factions/increased NPC traffic or increased dropping of loot, all that will add extra load to the server causing Hardware lag which in turn affects all players in the server.

An e.g .of that ask any admin from a server that added the Player Looting Mod and all will say the same increased lag cause of it. Some get around it by removing all NPC's unless there mission NPC's, but unless its dedicated pvp it gets boring fast for those that dont want to pvp with the lack of NPC's for rep fixing which yu cant do on missions.

I think that my mod willhave the same load as normal since it lower NPC looting. Thanks for the advice.

One last thing, last time I created a server (normal, without IONCROSS), when someone else tried to join, it just said that the connection is taking longer than expected. What could the reason for this be?

Your firewall and or routers NAT will be blocking it, so open 2300 - 2305 minimum if you still get problems then do the full Directx port range of 2300 - 2400

Ok, I have a firewall and a series of hubs for the intenet since its shared at curtain times of the day. What would I have to do too make it work?
