I think it's a little bit of everything.
- First it's the FL patch v1.1.
- Then there is a server-side mod like Lancerguard. Prevents certain not allowed equipment from having any effect or a lesser effect.
- IFSO rounds out forbidding what can and cannot be carried plus rude character names out of the game. Either kicks and bans can be the punishment.
- Next there is FLAC for the fleeting or persistant cheaters where it's lag kicks plus EXTENSIVE connect information (links IP address at the time logged in to the character name and account directory) allows you to follow their trails easily.
- Lastly there are my Server Deputies (SDs) that watch in their many other characters as well as their SD characters. They can exercise kick control over cheaters caught in the act and utilize a Cheater's Alliance (all RPG rules are null and void, only server rules stand) to isolate the cheaters.
Each have their contribution to preventing and dealing with cheaters. Each should be considered. Overall it isn't 100% effective but we have come a long way from the early days of a hosting a server where cheaters had their way. From what I have seen it is rare today.
