Connecting to Multiplayer Servers

Okay this will probably sound like a stupid question but I have to ask.

Why is it that when I try to get a list of available multiplayer servers I end up with no servers listed? I'm running on a DSL connection and have no firewalls running. Any help would be appreciated.

You have DSL so likely have:

1. a router working in NAT for a single port ie for one PC only or NAPT if its a multi port router.

That router casue of its NAT is a firewall, so you have to add some enteries in its Port rule/Virtual server/IP rules settings to allow access to the master server.

Ports Used By Freelancer and the Freelancer Server

Freelancer uses the standard DirectPlay8 UDP ports 2300?2400. Ports are allocated starting at 2300, working toward 2400. Port 2300 is only used when connecting to the global server.

This port range is used by both the game client and game server. The game server uses it to connect to the list server and to accept incoming connections from game clients. The game client uses it to connect to both the list server and the game servers.

2. a ISP that has a firewall on the connection somewhere and is blocking the ports required.

Other reason your not using directx 9.0b

Or if you can't donwload any server list at all you could try using the Direct IP connect method.

You can read instructions to connect to 3NET server bypassing global server list here, connecting to other Freelancer servers can be done similar.

You can find IPs and Ports of some Freelancer servers here.

Hope this helps.

Okay I've reset my DSL router to allow everything on this computer, Removed/Reinstalled Freelancer (running no patches) AND tried both direct IP commands using a bat file and the Fldirectip.hta option. I've manually entered from 1-4 servers and STILL get connecting to the global server... with no servers listed.

Any more ideas? This is damn annoying since I played EQ for 4 years with this system with no problems.

As per the readme.rtf it says

Servers added in this way will not appear in the list of available servers until the respond to a ping request from your computer.

So it seems like your 'puter isn't able to send a ping to the FL servers or your 'puter isn't receiving those pings (I assume those servers have been up for a while and always respond to pings). Try using the command line ping.exe program to ping those servers.

Otherwise re-install and run diagnosics on DirectX v9.0b as Pinger suggests. DirectX diagnostics are run from the dxdiag.exe program in the Windows/system32 directory.

Just tried the ping attempt and for some reason it's not pinging anything. This seems to be leading to the root of the problem but I've never had a compoter that wouldnt ping any advice?

Post Wed Apr 14, 2004 5:10 pm

btw the message I'm getting is Ping failed Error code 65. Any idea what is causing my computer to be unable to ping anything including itself? I've enabled all ports on my router and am running XP.

btw thanks for the feedback. It's reassuring to see someone reply to my post regarding this problem.

Problem resolved. I did a search on google for Ping error code 65 and saw that Zone Alarm, even when NOT running, can and will prevent a computer from pinging thereby preventing my computer from connecting to the global server...

Amaziing how well I CAn connect to the global server after uninstalling Zone alarm

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it!

P.S. Any advice on a good non-cheating server to play on?

You have two good servers above (in my signature and Earendil's)
