Running A LAN / Local Server

Hey ya,

I am currently having some trouble setting up a server for me an my mates. When I Start FLServer, it loads up fine, asks me for a server name etc and all appears well.

However, when I go into freelancer (on the same PC) and look for LAN servers, it cant find the server I created. If I go into Internet multiplayer then it is able to find my server, however it brings up a ping of "???" and 25% of the time when i try to connect it brings up a "you have been disconnected from the server" message box, however if i alt+tab out, the server is still running.

I have ran the 1.1 game patch, and the flserver application says its build 1.11, so thats all updated as far as i know. I am running on WinXP Pro, with Sygate Pro Firewall, having given both Freelancer.exe and FLServer.exe unrestricted access, aswell as Microsoft DirectPlay 8 (that seemed to pop up with freelancer so i am assuming its part of the net client).

What I would ideally like to achieve is so that I can connect to the server locally, and my mates can connect via the internet, but with the ping being "???" i am assuming that somewhere along the line the server app isnt transmitting some info, or it is being blocked.

I would be really greatfull if anybody could offer an insight into my server problems? Its probably something really simple that I am missing

p.s. The only other app I have associated with freelancer is the "IonCross Server Control" Application, however I only use this in "offline" mode to edit character ships etc. When I do try to use it in Online mode (so it controls flserver.exe) it causes flserver to crash, and the only way to restore flserver is to delete the server profile from the Freelancer folder in My Docs.

One again, I would appreciate any help you are able to offer.

Knape

I had the same thing happen (also running XPpro) and I did this go get around it. I created a 2nd windows login.
I login with name1 and start the server then I do a switch user and login on the same machine (don't close/end the 1st session - just switch names) and under the 2nd login ID when I run Freelancer in multiplayer mode I can connect either via Internet or LAN options while my buds login across the internet.

I'm sure there must be a better way or more of a tech way - but I did this and it worked for me - hope it works for you also.

You could try using direct IP connect method to your LAN IP adress: add -s<your_LAN_IP_adress> to your Freelancer shortcut. For more details refer to readme.htm on your original Freelancer CD.
